Review of Combat Description Cards
Combat Description Cards are intelligently laid out and easy to use cards that add flavor to combat. The cards are divided into three types of damage: Piercing, Blunt, and Slash. Each type is then broken down into one of three attack styles: Finesse, Power, and Range. Each style has a clear readable one-word Action-Word (eg. For a Blunt attack, it's Impressive for Finesse, Batter for Power, and Thump for Range) with its description. The first half of the description describes the successful attack by the hero, and optional second the vanquishing of the foe! The deck consists of 120 tarot-sized cards. Pretty obviously, these cards are best for combat-heavy games. Besides roleplaying games, you can add some flavor to boardgames, such as the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. Combat Description Cards is available on RPGNow as a PDF, Amazon in deck format, and the publisher's website for both. The cards will also be available as an app in the future.
As much as I'd like to write a whole bunch of words to fill out a review, my only negative comment about the cards is that, since the descriptions are so heroic, a gamemaster would have to mentally edit a description to make it more villainous or cowardly. Otherwise, you'll be well-prepared when a player yet again readies his crossbow.
