Review of The Mouth of the Marsh

The Mouth of the Marsh is a good product and a very good adventure. The cover of the adventure reads, "The stunning climax to The Lejendary Road and The Dance of the Fairie Ring", also by Jon Creffield. The first two adventures are not needed to play this one. In fact, except for one or two recurring characters, there is really no reason why they should be connected at all.

I will break this review down into a few simple parts:

Artwork: varies from poor to good. Overall, the artwork is about average. The cover is good, reminiscent of an older TSR AD&D module. The cover shows the gates of the Town of Eelton, including guards and an unlucky smuggler paying the price of his crimes... The maps inside are not spectacular, though much nicer than the maps of Hekaforge's previous releases.

Content: this is where the adventure, The Mouth of the Marsh, shines. The 58 pages are chock full of information. In fact, there is so much information packed into this module, it probably should have been broken into two separate adventures. Part of the module describes the Town of Eelton, its buildings and its inhabitants. The other portion of the adventure describes the various locales where an unlucky Avatar (PC) can get into no small bit of trouble. Some of the aforementioned locales are a little "obvious". I mean, the adventurers arrive at a circus, it would be obvious to anyone who has gamed for at least a few months that there would be something fishy going on! Still, the Mouth of the Marsh is a very good adventure.

Compatibility: most GMs would not particularly care how compatible an adventure for one game system would be with another. I differ in this respect. I tend to use whatever adventure I happen to like with any game system that I happen to be playing. Fortunately, the Lejendary Adventure game system is fairly simple (not simplistic, though) and shouldn't be too hard to convert to whatever system you happen to like, assuming that you don't play Lejendary Adventure (LA). The spells (Activations) would be the most difficult to convert, I would think. A lot of the creatures can be easily swapped out with the same creature from another system, i.e. a Lesser Orc (LA) is about the same as an Orc (D&D). I don't mean to imply that the LA game system isn't worth playing, it is. I enjoy it immensely, but I know that some like the complexity of Harn or Rolemaster, some like the mainstream availability of D&D or GURPS, and some like the games of yesteryear, such as DragonQuest or Warhammer FRP (my personal favorite setting).

Overall, I would recommend this product to anyone running a fantasy campaign. It would be satisfactory for the majority of gamers.
