Review of Crisis of Faith

Games have metaplots, but what makes them good or bad--as with all else--is how its done. Dream Pod 9 decided, with regard to their Heavy Gear game, to compile their story together in a series of Storyline Books. The first of these is Crisis of Faith, which covers the first end of the story (from TN 1933 to TN 1935).

You will find no crunchy bits here. There are no character stats, no vehicle stats, no stats or rules of any kind within these pages. It's all story material, and it's reminiscent of the time between World War I and World War II.

The format works around freelance spy Nicosa Renault and her efforts in tracing the events that lead up to the assassination of the First Follower of Sorrento Revisionism: Thor Hutchinson. There's a timeline of events, plenty of wonderful manga-style artwork, and a lot of text to back up the artwork. There's a lot of intertwining plots that twist and turn around and around until they (or their effects) result in a Norlight war hero blowing off Hutchinson's head live on global trideo.

By the time you've reached the end, you'll see a story worthy of the many anime science-fiction series that inspired it- and worthy of becoming one itself. (Yes, I know that one is on the way, but I want to see this story.) Check it out, gang- especially if you're one who's into the story more than anything else.
