Bad stuff out of the way: The print is small and is layed out in an
initially confusing manner. You get used to it, but it takes a bit for
your eyes to focus. The included character sheet takes the concept of
"generic" to new heights. I've seen funkier tax forms!
Everything else is first-rate. The "new" Kult has an index. (Yay!) The
artwork is much improved and surreal enough to add that all- important
atmosphere. The rules are much more clearly presented than in the
first edition. Plus, they left out some of the truly annoying things
that made you want to toss the game.
The streamlined combat and magic systems are a big plus, as is the
introductory adventure and a new little surprise for Gamemasters,
called "the Dark Art." (It will help you torture, er, I mean
"entertain" your jaded players. Hee hee hee!) A vast improvement over
the original.
What of the game itself? There is still only one true horror rpg out
there. Want an X-Files/Twin Peaks/Millenium campaign? Kult can do it
like nothing else. Want a "splatterpunk" adventure that would send
Clive Barker to the nuthatch? Kult has everything you could possibly
want. Last time, this game was almost denied its rightful place in the
industry due to the lousy layout, garbled rules, and clunky
mechanics. This time, there is no excuse, there is no escape....
