Review of GURPS Magic Items 1

I have the original GURPS Magic Items 1, and I never really cared for it. Granted, GURPS magic items tend to have a certain flare, because the creation system for enchanted items is so darn flexible...but they tend to lack that certain insanity of AD&D's Deck of Many Things. It seems that in GURPS most campaigns revolve around characters, rather than the items that they are carrying (AD&D seems to revolve around those fantastic items which appear in the DM's Guide).

In any ordinary world I would just have put this book up and never looked at it again, but that would have been my loss. Loren Wiseman, Alain Dawson, Jack Elmy, and the ever extraordinary Dan Smith have done a bang up job of improving the looks of this old book. The material within is typical GURPS...good, solid stuff...but the look, the look of the book is a spark to the imagination and almost a magic item itself.

There are many sparks to the imagination within the pages of this book. I would highly recommend it as a book of such sparks, not as a catalogue for PC covetousness. This book may seem unessential to some (me...the idiot who doubted Steve Jackson again. I think "Why is he putting this out?" And he blows my socks off time and again.), but it is very well put together, with a stunning new look. It gets an "A."
