Review of The Rolling Socks - Candies

Review Summary: Gaming socks. For those who doubt that gaming is the king of mainstream.

Blurb from the publisher: 'We all know how important our feet are. After all, they lead us to the adventure! It is thanks to them that we can go where we're drawn to, and we can return in a "no-brainer" mode activated - after all, our feet know their way home. This is called an autopilot - or a teleport.

In that case, it's kind of obvious that the protection of our feet is imperative. And if they are to be protected, they should be treated and shown with style! They need to be kept warm, especially on cold days and nights. They need to be cuddled in a soft material so that they are not chafed. They must be shielded from the harsh environment, so they can serve us well and long. And when they are properly protected, it is good to be able to show ourselves to other people in them... and even send a signal about what is important to us while we're at it. Shoes? Sure, they meet some of those requirements too. But the first and most important layer of protection our feet know is undoubtedly a pair of SOCKS. And what's a better way to show the world that we are gamers and dice collectors, if not stylish footwear?

We love to meet the expectations of our fans, thus we're presenting to you these wonderful, practical, and stylish socks with a dice motif. They will provide your feet with warmth, comfort, protection, and imagery - all at the same time! Our Rolling Socks are a great gift idea, both for you and for someone else you'd like to endow. Every gamer and collector (regardless of their gender) will appreciate the intention of this handout - and the message behind it!

Red and blue dice on a yellow background resemble delicious sweets, and this is the perfect tone for everyone who likes to taste life to its fullest. Made of a blend of combed cotton, polyamide, and elastane, they ensure comfort and durability, and the vivid colors attract the eye to polyhedral shapes. Stepping on a die will not be so dangerous anymore! Protect your feet in the best style!.

- Fits like a... sock — EU sizes 36-41 and 42-46 (US sizes 5-8 and 9-12), for smaller and medium feet.

- Lively & joyful — Red and blue dice on a yellow background are eye-catching and awe-inspiring, while the black coloring of heels and toes adds some teeth to the image!

- Style & symbol — The pattern of dice is sewn with colorful threads, and it's everlasting! Everyone will know who they are dealing with, always!

- Comfort & certainty — The socks are made of combed cotton (80%), elastane (5%), and polyamide (15%), so they are comfortable and durable.

- Hassle-free — Wash them at 40° C (104 °F). We recommend washing your socks after use, it's good for everyone!'

What you get: Your EUR 9,48 or equivalent will buy you a pair of The Rolling Socks - Candies, namely a pair of dice-themed... unisex socks! The socks are sold in two sizes, 36-41 and 42-46. Being a habitual 43-44,5 depending on the brand of shoes, I playtested (hah!) the bigger size.

The Rolling Socks line presents the same design in three different colour schemes: the present Candies, Cloudlets, and Lanterns. The scheme involves 22 large-sized polyhedral dice designs on each sock, from d4s to d20s. In Candies ten dice are red while the other twelve are blue. The dice are presented on a bright yellow background, with black finish on the heel, the toes and the rim of the sock. The motto of Q Workshop ('All dice tell a story') is proudly stated under the foot.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have not received the other two iterations of The Rolling Socks. Thus, I can only compare the set I am currently wearing to the photos of the other two sets.

The strong points: I am a sucker for gamer-themed non-gaming accessories, otherwise I wouldn't have been reviewing a pair of socks. Many gamer-related accessories are kitschy-bad, some of them however are kitschy-good or funny. These socks definitely fall on the latter categories. With yellow, blue and red displayed with such pride and intensity, one obviously wears these socks to make a lasting impression. Whether that impression is good or bad depends on the audience and their sense of taste. I can imagine sitting dignitaries wearing them during the traditional photo op, smirking in the thought that a select few will understand what the socks are about. They depict polyhedrals, yet these have no numbers. So, what are they really? Candies, balls, or random shapes? They are dice of course, and even more so because the design also includes Q-Workshop's new, curved d4. That's a nice touch there. If the presentation of the dice causes some confusion, the motto does not. I actually enjoyed how it is fully hidden until you put your feet up on a table or a puff. It's a statement, really.

Comfort-wise the socks feel good. They are slightly thicker than I expected them to be, something that I consider positive, they are not however sports socks. You can use them for sports, surely however they will deteriorate faster. I have worn them a few times now (with the in-between washes), and they are doing great.

Needless to say, this is a great game-related gift to gamers and non-gamers alike. I can think of a dozen ways of presenting them, from the feel-good 'gamer socks for my gamer friend!' to the upfront 'you are boring. You deserve socks' which is of course ironic, since these socks are not boring.

The weak points: We are talking about socks. They keep you warm, they are comfortable, that's pretty much it. If there is one criticism to register, that would be that the designs are not immediately perceptible as dice. Well, have you checked the product's title? Also, no complaints about the bright and explosive colour scheme. If you prefer something more subdued, feel free to check out the line's two other iterations; the colour scheme is substantially toned down.

Conclusion: Be it because you are an extravert, or you have the same stunning sense of taste as I do, or you simply wish to make a statement, the Candies iteration of The Rolling Socks will not disappoint you. You don't even need to be a gamer to like them, they work even if you hate games. Here's to splashing colour schemes and keeping our feet warm while we game!
