Review of Mutant Chronicles: Cardinal’s Coin Set (20 coins)

What you get: Your EUR 11,99 or USD 13,99 or GBP 9,99 will buy you the Mutant Chronicles: Cardinal's Coin Set (20 coins), a set of coins with depictions and themes taken out of the well-known Mutant Chronicles 3rd Edition Roleplaying Game line. This is not the first accessory or luxury item that Modiphius has put out for this line. The incredible Cartel Artefact Bag is a shockingly luxurious item that I am using every day on plain sight, while we have also seen together the Luna Police Department Badge and the Brotherhood vs Dark Legion Medallion.
The coins are similar in design to the aforementioned Medallion; only the size changes. They are metallic, round and have a diameter of 3 mm and a thickness of 2 mm. Each side primarily depicts the emblems of The Brotherhood and the Dark Legion respectively, which, as we all know very well, are based on a cross-like design. The former however is surrounded by the inscription of 'THE LIGHT AND WISDOM OF THE CARDINAL', and is placed on a background of a contained energy field. The latter is surrounded by the five emblems of the dreaded Dark Apostles, and is placed between what could be the malevolent rays of a dark sun, or tentacles, or demonic appendages with a will of their own.
Each set comes at a heavily discounted price while stocks last. In the past it used to cost almost double the indicated amount. Once gone, this item will not be reprinted.
The strong points: Seeing how these coins are miniature versions of the Brotherhood vs Dark Legion Medallion I can't but repeat the commentary from the review about the craftmanship and quality, and namely that they are top notch. This is not a cheap fire-and-forget accessory for a quick buck; it addresses itself to the hard core enthusiasts of Mutant Chronicles and of Warzone Resurrection. When it comes to the aesthetics, the energy under The Brotherhood's cross seems barely containable, crackling and pulsating and being ready to jump at the alieness of the Dark Legion. The Dark Legion's cross on the other hand is shrouded in mysticism, surrounded by sumbols that man was not meant to understand. One can practically imagine the tentacles move slowly and suggestively against the putrid backdrop. Design-wise, this is nothing but excellence.
In contrast to all the other luxury items for Mutant Chronicles which have a limited gaming usability, the possibilities with these coins are endless. Use them as any of the meta currencies of the Mutant Chronicles RPG? Check. Instead of Resource cards for Warzone Resurrection? Check. As a marker of any kind in Warzone Resurrection? Check. To substitute something less luxurious looking in the heavily anticipated Siege of the Citadel, which will be published later in 2018? Check. There are a lot of things that can be done here, with a luxury item at a very affordable price. Having twenty of those beauties and not a measly number also helps a lot.
The weak points: I am a bit perplexed by having the inscription start from the top of the disc. Effectively this means that you are reading most of the motto upside down. All mottos of the kind that I have seen start from the lower left side, to avoid this issue. In any event, it is not a biggie.
Conclusion: I have no idea why the Mutant Chronicles: Cardinal's Coin Set hasn't sold out up to now and why it is offered at such a ridiculously low price. What I do know is that it is very well designed, that it has many gaming uses for either the RPG or the wargame of the line, and that Mutant Chronicles fans who do not buy them now will be regretting it for a lifetime. The price of heresy is regret indeed.
