Review of e-Raptor Eldritch Horror Complete Tokens Set

Review Summary: Pimp my Eldritch Horror even more... but only the basic game.

Blurb from the publisher: 'Compatible with the Eldritch Horror base set, our Eldritch Horror Complete Tokens Set (184 pieces) is a perfect way to upgrade your Cthulhu game with high quality plexiglass tokens.

The set is created to match the quantities of tokens available in the base box and to make your gaming experience even better. The set contains:

- 36 Clue Tokens;

- 20 Eldritch Tokens;

- 30 Improvement Tokens (6 of each skill);

- 36 Sanity Tokens;

- 42 Health Tokens;

- 20 Travel Ticket Tokens.'

What you get: Your EUR 30 or equivalent will buy you the e-Raptor Eldritch Horror™ Complete Tokens Set, an accessory conttatning 184 pieces of tokens for the game line of the same name, or rather its basic game which, funnily enough, we still haven't seen together. In contrast however to the game's hard cardboard tokens, these ones are made from plexiglass. One side is transparent, while the other is opaque. Depending on which side you are seeing each token from, it will have a slightly different effect.

Seeing how e-Raptor does not hold the rights to the exact design of each token, each type is slightly different, but still instantly recognizable for what it is.

The strong points: This is e-Raptor's second shout-out for Eldritch Horror, following the extremely convincing e-Raptor Organizer Compatible with Eldritch Horror. The material is the same. Plexiglass gives the game a sleek, modern look, makes things look fresh and untouched. The graphic design is far superior to the one in the original game. The Magnifying Lens token, or rather the cities on the obverse side, are far more legible in the present set.

The two e-Raptor pimp-my-game products work well with one another; it would have been incredible if they didn't. The shapes and sizes of the tokens are practically identical to the ones from the original; I am writing 'practically' because the present ones have far more detail than the cardboard originals. As an example, the heart token even has the shape detail of the aorta leaving from the heart. All the tokens are extremely easy to read and use during the game.

The weak points: I have a couple of objections concerning the colouration of the numbers on the heart and brain tokens. Yellow on red and light blue on blue might not be instantly discernible under certain light conditions. These are probably the only tokens where the cardboard originals might be easier to read. I would have also made some of the Improvement tokens a bit less heavy on the background (namely the brain token), at the end of the day this is nothing serious.

If you have expansions which add tokens to the game, be forewarned: the present product does not contain the tokens of any of the game's expansions. Thus, you might find yourself playing with some cardboard and some plexiglass tokens.

The price is by far the biggest hurdle. That's practically the price of a couple of small expansions for the game. Those who play Eldritch Horror more casually will really have to think about it. Those whose cardboard tokens have started melting from too much use however, will find exactly what they are looking for. Even though plexiglass is not indestructible (you really do not want to scratch the opaque surface), it will definitely last longer than cardboard. Additionally, it can withstand all sorts of accidents including food and liquids on your table.

Conclusion: The e-Raptor Eldritch Horror™ Complete Tokens set is another great product in e-Raptor's support line for the game, and has the exact same preconditions as its Organizer brother: a) you play Eldritch Horror, b) you play it often and fanatically enough to enjoy pimping it up to that scale , c) you prioritize pimping it over buying new games and d) you have the (admittedly high) funds. If that's where you are, it is worth it.
