Review of Lone Wolf Adventure Game Deluxe Dice Set

What you get: Your GBP 12,99 or equivalent will buy you the Lone Wolf Adventure Game Deluxe Dice Set, a set of six plastic decahedrons dice in the size a roleplayer expects (approximate length 2 cm) for the Lone Wolf Adventure Game line.

The background is white with all the designs and engravings in red. The white numbers are not only big in a font that is strongly reminiscent of Times New Roman, they also boast a thick red fimbriation. The background is round, conjuring images of exotic lands (Asia, to my untrained eyes), with undecipherable exotic elements above it. There is no 0, it being substituted by the iconic wolf's head that is the emblem of the line.

The strong points: There's something about the bright white and the dark red that makes these dice look really majestic. They are crystal clear to read under any light conditions. It's cool to be greeted by persistent wolf stares every time you roll excellently and face wolf snouts instead of numbers. The design behind them is complex yet discrete; if one is not paying attention he might not notice the intricate details, something that I count as a strong positive. After all, the dice are there to add, not to distract. I am not certain whether the patterns are something I should have recognized, to my eyes however they are simply reminiscent of Asian patterns.

In that sense, these dice look brilliant with games outside Lone Wolf, like L5R for example. In fact they can be easily compared to the Legend of the Five Rings Dice Sets which they surpass when it comes to aesthetics.

Unless the dice come poorly manufactured, there aren't many flaws one can find on a set. There are no defects or imbalances when it comes to dice-rolling. I rolled each die around a hundred times, and even though the numbers obviously did not come out exactly as statistically expected, there is nothing to suggest that there are inherent flaws. If this is the one single pair you have, it will perform its duties with ease.

The weak points: Discerning 6s and 9s is not that obvious, thanks to the lack of dots or other markings; one has to look at the dice's orientation in order to understand which number that is. In the heat of the session that is nowhere near certain.

Outside Lone Wolf, the set would work great for fantasy settings (or fantasy settings that use exclusively ten-siders in any event), but wouldn't fare as well outside the genre. That's just the way the set looks.

If you were not paying attention, this set includes six d10s, and is not a standard polyhedral set. Do I even really need to write that stuff?

Conclusion: The Lone Wolf Adventure Game Deluxe Dice Set is as deluxe as it is old school. It succeeds in what it sets out to do, and does so unapologetically. The dice strongly enhance the game they came out for, and are likely to accompany you even in other escapades. Who will blink first, you or the Wolf?
