I'm writing blog posts at work for $75 for up to 500 words. 15 cents/word, but topics of my own choice, short-form, every 3-4 weeks. I have a $3200 writing grant to hire a student at my college, 10 hours/week for two semesters, that is still unfilled after weeks because no one (a) wants to write or (b) can write. Grant writers still get paid a good rate ($100+/hour) to get grants out the door.

Recent rates for science & technical writing still seem mostly at the $0.50-$1.00/word rates, with people often asking for last-minute editors or people able to contribute on a quick basis. So it seems some of the shift in writing away from staff and salaried positions, has put an emphasis on freelancers who can work quickly. "Quickly" is better than "free".

So rejoice, those able to write, for there are paying markets for your skills! Now, finding them, that's a game unto itself... but they do exist.
