THE GAMES WORKSHOP WEBWAY

November 5, 1999

Welcome, Games Workshop fanatics to the November edition of the Games

Workshop Webway! Thanksgiving will be here (in the USA at least) at the end

of the month and we have a suitable hobby-packed feast of Games Workshop

information, interviews and sneak previews for you to consume and fall

asleep in front of the TV with.

Just so everyone knows, the Webway subscription list has surpassed 14,000

members world-wide so far, so count yourself as one of the lucky few to have

an inside scoop as to what's going on with Games Workshop! If you know of

someone else out there that you think would like to receive the official

Games Workshop US newsletter, tell them to click their way over to

http://www.Games -Workshop.com/newsletter.html and sign up!

NEWS

While there haven't been any big tournaments or conventions in the past

month, we do have some news about what's coming up next year as well as what

we've been up to here at Games Workshop US HQ.

Y2K US GRAND TOURNAMENTS ARE COMING!!!

Of course the millennium turning over is pretty big news, but not as

important as getting into next year's US Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000

Grand Tournaments!!! We've just received the news on when the events will be

happening straight from Hobby Promotions Manager Jason Buyaki's (pronounced

boooo-yaki - ed.) mouth here's what we've got:

Baltimore WFB Grand Tournament - March 11-12, 2000 (120 participants)

Baltimore 40K Grand Tournament - March 18-19, 2000 (120 participants)

Seattle Grand Tournament - April 8-9, 2000 (120 participants)

Chicago Grand Tournament - May 13-14, 2000 (168 participants)

Tournament veterans and those who pay attention will notice that the

Baltimore Grand Tournament has been split up into two weekends this year.

One for Warhammer and one for Warhammer 40,000. This allows us to have twice

the number of entrants at each event!!!

There are also whisperings of additional Grand Tournaments this year

possibly in the Mid-West or Southern portions of the United States. Complete

information on how to get registered in next year's US Grand Tournaments

will be appearing in the North American edition of White Dwarf #240 and on

our website at http://www.Games-Workshop.com. We'll also have army

requirements, exact dates, times and locations as soon as they are

available.

Rumor has it that the plans for this year's events are bigger and better

than ever, so make sure you get your army painted and get involved in the

2000 US Grand Tournament circuit!

Don't Live In The US? - Don't feel like we're leaving you out in the cold!

You can get involved in our Grand Tournaments as well. Gamers from places

like the UK and Germany have made their way to the US in the past and Games

Workshop holds other Grand Tournaments all over the world. As soon as we

hear about Grand Tournaments in any country we'll pass the word along to

you. So keep an eye on the website for the latest information!

US MORDHEIM LEAGUE CLOSES UP

Here at Games Workshop US, we've been running a massive 65 player Mordheim

league all through October. Every day brave souls have ventured through the

Gargoyle Gate and into the City of the Damned in search of gold, glory and

precious Wyrdstone!

Each Thursday our Hobby Promotions staff has held special League Night

Events that tend to sometimes take a bizarre twist from reality even for the

Warhammer World. So far we've had a Savage Orc invasion, a terrifying Zombie

infestation, shipwrecked pirates and horrifying frog beasts from the city's

sewers to plague our poor warbands.

As I write this, the League proper has closed and the League Championships

are beginning for the top warbands in the city. We hope to be featuring as

much Mordheim League info as we can fit in White Dwarf Magazine and in the

news pages of the US Website. So, keep your eyes peeled for horrifying

photographs, reports and downloadable scenarios as well as news on who 's

going to take the mantle of top warband leader in Mordheim! However, if you

ask me it should have been my Skaven warband. It would have been too if my

Assassin Master hadn't lost a hand, taken multiple injuries and gotten beat

up in a pit fight!

ONLINE CHAT

Looking for something to do on Wednesday nights? Why not come and chat with

our very own Tyranid Tim Huckelbery about what's hot with Games Workshop!

Tim runs moderates his chat sessions on America Online each Wednesday night

at 10PM EST in the AOL OGF Commons (Main Hall). He let me know that this

month most of the discussions will concern Mordheim and the Imperial Guard,

but Tim is happy to talk about almost everything to do with Games Workshop

and Citadel Miniatures!!!

So, if you're AOL enabled and looking to talk to someone with some serious

hobby knowledge, surf your way into the Hive Mind and pay a visit to Tyranid

Tim!

NEW RELEASES

CODEX: IMPERIAL GUARD

"All right you dogfaces, listen up! Button up that shirt and suck in that

gut! You're in the Imperial Guard now!!!" This month the forces of the

Imperium get a major upgrade with the release of the all-new Codex: Imperial

Guard. This excellent volume is filled to capacity with plenty of new rules,

awesome troops and excellent artwork for Imperial Guard players all over the

galaxy. Here's just a short glimpse of what you'll find inside...

- New and upgraded troop types like the elite airborne troops of the Storm

Troopers and tough as nails Hardened Veterans!

- Cool rules such as the Commissar Summary Execution.

- New wargear like Trademark Items, Hellguns and additional Vehicle

Upgrades.

- Complete details and rules on the entire range of Imperial Guard tanks and

vehicles from the venerable Leman Russ to the all-new Vanquisher.

All of this as well as a complete army list, plenty of Special Characters

(Colonel Schaeffer's Last Chancers!), army building tips, background

snippets, new artwork and tons of full-color photos featuring miniatures

from our Imperial Guard range painted by the 'Eavy Metal team! If you like

lots of huge rumbling tanks and hundreds of hard-bitten grunts, the Imperial

Guard is the army for you!

As a special bonus, since you've all been so good, here's a little something

new from Codex: Imperial Guard:

STORM TROOPERS:

Points/Model WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv

Storm Trooper 12 3 4 3 3 1 3 1 8

4+

Veteran Sergeant 22 3 4 3 3 1 3 2

8 4+

Squad: The squad consists of one Veteran Sergeant and nine Storm Troopers.

Weapons: Hellgun and frag grenades. Any model may exchange his hellgun for a

hellpistol and close combat weapon at no extra cost. All models have

carapace armour and targeters (see the Wargear section for details).

Options: Up to two models may each be armed with one of the following:

flamer at +5 points; melta gun at +10 points; plasma gun at +10 points;

grenade launcher at +10 points. The squad may be equipped with krak grenades

for an additional +20 points. One model may carry a comm-link at +5 points.

Character: The Veteran Sergeant may take additional equipment from the

Armoury.

Transport: The squad may be mounted in a Chimera.

Special Rules:

Infiltrators: Storm Troopers are trained to work their way into a forward

position on the battlefield. This means that they may be set up using the

Infiltrators rule, but only if the mission allows for Infiltrators to be

used. If not then they must be set up as normal. Storm Troopers that have a

Chimera may not infiltrate.

Deep Strike: Storm Troopers are sometimes deployed using para-gliders or

grav-chutes. To represent this, up to one Storm Trooper unit may deploy

using the Deep Strike rules if the mission allows for them to be used. Storm

Troopers that have a Chimera may not Deep Strike.

- Storm Troopers receive additional training and have access to more

sophisticated equipment than most ordinary Imperial Guardsmen. They

specialize in covert operations and are used to spear-head assaults, so they

don't usually carry heavy weapons as these would only slow them down. The

special treatment and elite status given to Storm Troopers causes a certain

amount of rancor amongst regular Guardsmen and has earned them a variety of

colorful nicknames, such as 'Glory Boys' and 'Big Toy Soldiers'.

I have to say that I've always thought of starting up an Imperial Guard

force and with the addition of this book to our Warhammer 40,000 Codex

series, I'm convinced that the Guard are the new 40K army for me. It's just

that cool!!! Additionally, Imperial Guard players will be able to expand the

scope of their armies in a few months with the upcoming Codex: Catachan.

More on this soon!

"Now, drop and give me twenty you pukes. The army of the Emperor's your home

now, so get ready to pick up that lasgun and fight for humanity!!!"

WHITE DWARF #239 PREVIEW:

- MOVE IT OUT YOU DOGFACES!

The new Codex: Imperial Guard book has driven everyone into a camouflaged

frenzy and the guys in the White Dwarf bunker are no exception. This month

there are plenty of excellent articles covering the new army book, the

incredible plastic Catachan Jungle Fighters and the history of some the

Guard's most famous conflicts in the 41st millennium!

- 1999 CANADIAN GRAND TOURNAMENT

Our pals up there in the Great White North really know how to throw a proper

Grand Tournament and we've got proof in the form of this photo-filled

feature article.

- WARHAMMER CHRONICLES

The Games Development gang gets down and dirty with rules for Tunnel Troops

for Skaven, Dwarfs and others as well as more info on those mysterious Tomb

Kings of Khemri.

- MORDHEIM TOWN CRYER

New info continues to trickle in from the City of the Damned. This month, we

get details on how the Sisters of Sigmar are trying to save our souls, the

well-dressed free traders of Marienburg and our resident archaeologist Nigel

Stillman takes a look at the architecture of Mordheim.

STIRRING IN THE WEBWAY

Where can you get a glance at some of the projects that our Games Developers

and Miniature Designers have set for release a few months down the road?

Nowhere else but the Games Workshop Webway Preview!

This time around you're treated to a glance at the horrifying new Blood

Dragon and Lahmia Vampires as well as the suitably majestic new Imperial

Guard Special Character, Lord Solar Macharius! Forge World continues to

break new ground with a preview of their first aircraft kits with the Ork

Fighta-Bomma and Ork Fighta!

Remember that our Sneak Peek section changes its URL each month so make sure

you update your bookmarks so that you get the latest glimpse of our exciting

New Releases.

This month you can check out all the excitement at:

http://www.Games-Workshop.com/Webway/Webway_Preview_Thanks.html

(I know it's hard to read, but it is Webway_Preview_Thanks.html).

Make sure that you map out the route to your nearest Games Workshop store or

Independent Retailer, because we have tons of ultra-cool new stuff coming

up!

MORDHEIM Q&A

Our Roolzboyz continue to strive for complete freedom from rules questions

with this month's batch of Q&A. Since we've still got plenty to say about

Mordheim, try these on for size!

1. When you have more than one Henchman in a Henchmen group, how does their

experience affect your warband rating?

- A LOT of people seem to be confused on this one. A Henchman group

with five members and one experience point adds +5 to your warband rating,

not +1, as many players seem to believe.

2. If a warrior armed with a spear and a sword (or any other one-handed

weapon) gets charged by an enemy model, does the spear wielder get both of

his attacks to strike first or does he get an attack with the spear, the

enemy strikes and then an attack with his sword?

- First the spear attack, then the charger's attacks and then the

sword attack.

3. The Blowpipe is 30GC in the Skaven Equipment list and 25GC in its

description on the next page. Which one is it?

- 25GC.

Those Roolzboyz sure are smart. If you'd like to see our complete Mordheim

FAQ online, filled with tons of interesting Q&A tidbits, click your browser

over to the Mordheim section of our US website to check it out!

HOBBY TIPS - MAKING YOUR ARMOR SHINE

No, I'm not talking about your suit of plate mail. Codex: Imperial Guard has

given us the idea that we should pass on a few quick tips on how to dress up

your AFVs (that's Armored Fighting Vehicles for those of you who aren't

afflicted with tank lust)!

Let's get started with:

Turrets: The turret of your vehicle normally contains your big guns, so you

want to make sure that it is as well-protected and cool-looking as possible

when you blow your opponents into oblivion. The addition of some spare tank

treads, rubber tires or some putty armor is an easy conversion to make and

can be used to represent the Extra Armor (or Armor Plates for you Orky

types) vehicle upgrade.

Barrel Extensions and Muzzle Brakes: Dressing up those big guns is easy by

combining two gun barrels together with a little plastic glue. Also, adding

a larger muzzle brake on the end of the cannon (check out some tank

reference books or the Internet if you're not sure what I mean) will make

your Basilisk something to truly be afraid of!

Want more? Keep watching the How To: section of the US website for a new

feature article on this very subject. Coming soon!

WANT TO BE AN OUTRIDER?

Since our last issue of the Games Workshop Webway came out, our esteemed

former Outrider Administrator has been promoted to the position of manager

of the Hobby Promotions Department! In order to fill the void that Jason's

ascendance created we had to search far and wide to come up with a suitable

replacement. Then, buried under a rock in deserted cornfield in the depths

of Margate, New Jersey, we found him - our new Outrider Administrator: Terry

McGregor!

Since he's new to the Promotions Department, we thought that all of you

would enjoy a look into the ideas and philosophy that he's going to be

bringing to the program.

GW Webway: Terry, What's the Outrider Program all about anyway?

Terry: The Outrider Program is designed to help get new players into the

Games Workshop Hobby and to show them just how much fun painting and playing

with Citadel Miniatures can be. It's also an elite group of veteran Games

Workshop hobbyists who want to show the world that Games Workshop is the

best!

GW Webway: What are you looking for in potential Outriders?

Terry: There are many roles that the Outriders have to fill. We want

outgoing enthusiastic hobby fanatics who don't argue about the rules, but

realize that playing the game and having fun is the most important thing.

Dedication to the Games Workshop Hobby and the ability to teach others how

to play is paramount. Outriders also have to help us demonstrate our newest

games and miniatures to the public and help us to easily reach a much larger

audience through word of mouth than we could on our own (in North America at

least).

GW Webway: What are the benefits of being an Outrider?

Terry: Outriders are compensated for their work and demonstrations with tons

of Games Workshop products! They are also invited to attend and help take

part in all of our major company events including Staff Tournaments, Grand

Tournaments and of course, Games Day! There are also plenty of extra-special

incentives that Outriders get a chance to participate in all year long.

GW Webway: All right, you got us. How do you go about joining up?

Terry: The best way to start the application process is to send me your

complete mailing address via e-mail to Terry M@Games-Workshop.com and I'll

send you out an application packet.

Note: At present Terry only runs the Outrider Program in North America.

However, residents of other portions of the world are encouraged to contact

him and he will pass you along to the proper individuals to get an Outrider

Program started in your country.

AND MORE...

Never forget about the awesome power of the Games Workshop Website. Our busy

Web gurus are busy keeping the site updated, which means that whenever a new

job opens up, they get it posted immediately. In case you didn't know where

to look to find these great job opportunities, go to

http://www.games-workshop.com/newsintro.html and visit the Employment

Opportunities link at the bottom of the menu bar on the left. If you're

looking for a job, then this is a section you simply must stop by.

QUESTION OF THE MONTH

If you don't remember or weren't here at the time, October's Question of the

Month was - Where do you come from and what is your favorite Citadel

Miniature? Let's see what we came up with!

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I have to say that all of you certainly kept me busy over the last month or

so tallying your responses and keeping track of all the different countries

that the Webway reaches out to. We were very curious to see just how widely

distributed our audience was as well as whether there were pockets of Games

Workshop hobbyists that we didn't know about. Here's what we got...

COUNTRIES IN ORDER OF RESPONSE:

USA - 201 responses

Australia - 92

Canada - 50

UK - 44

Sweden - 21

Germany - 19

New Zealand - 18 (We love kiwis!)

Denmark - 13

Norway - 10

South Africa - 9

France, Scotland and Finland - 7

Italy and the Netherlands - 6

Portugal and Austria - 4

Belgium - 3

Argentina, Holland, Japan, Malaysia, Ireland, Singapore, Slovenia and Mexico

(Ole!) - 2

Northern Ireland, Spain, Brazil, Greece, Guam, Hungary, Peru, Phillipines,

Poland, Switzerland (home of fine chocolate!), Thailand and Venezuela - 1

Total - 256 responses which is about 1.7% or our subscription base

1.7%! C'mon folks I need to hear from you! Next month I want at least 5%.

Thanks to everyone who wrote in and let me know where you were from. It was

great to find out that the Games Workshop Webway and the GW Hobby has spread

to pretty much every corner of the world! Now I just have to start working

on all of those Valhallan Ice Warrior commanders down in Antarctica!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE?

On to the hotly contested favorite miniature survey. It seems that more of

you out there wanted to let everyone know which awesome model was your

favorite rather than where you were from as I got no less than 448 votes for

Citadel Miniatures which ranged from ancient history to as yet unreleased

products! Since the list is over 195 different entries long, I'm just going

to list out the top ten favorites.

TOP 10 FAVORITE CITADEL MINIATURES:

New Ork Warboss - 24 votes (The winnah and new champeen!)

Eldar Falcon - 19

Green Knight - 16 (Top Warhammer favorite)

Bloodthirster - 15

Abaddon - 13

Eldar Avatar - 13

Space Marine Terminator Captain - 9 (Incredible miniature!)

Chaos Space Marine Lord - 8

Hive Tyrant - 8

Wood Elf Dragon - 7

It looks like the Brian Nelson's huge Ork Warboss was the clear-cut winner

all over the world! It's hard not to make it your favorite, as the miniature

is so cool, it looks like it might come off of the tabletop and krump you if

you didn't vote for it!

The Green Knight was a close contender for a long-while and we were sure

that he would finally take the top honors in the end. However, while he is

green, he just couldn't hold out against the devastating power of the

Waaagh!

NOVEMBER'S QUESTION OF THE MONTH

Since the winter holidays are coming up and every country out there

celebrates in some way, I felt that something present oriented would be

appropriate this month. So, November's question is: What do you want from GW

for the holidays? E-mail me your answers to: Troll@Games-Workshop.com and

we'll tally up the results and publish them in the December edition of the

GW Webway. Remember, I want at least 725 of you to respond this time around

so don't disappoint me or I'll have to tell Santa Dwarf to leave some coal

in your stockings during the winter holidays!
