THE GAMES WORKSHOP WEBWAY
October 1, 1999

Times are a changin'! This issue of the Games Workshop Webway is filled to the brim with information on New Releases, Job Opportunities, Poll Results, Current Events and perhaps most exciting - news about our latest game Mordheim! Also, this hobby-packed missive is under new management as our former scribe - Jason "Face" Bergeron has drifted off into lands unknown outside of the borders of Games Workshop US. Let's all say goodbye to him - "Bye, Face!" - Rich.
What does this mean for you? Well in terms of this newsletter, nothing at all. We will still provide you with the latest and greatest hobby information, previews, thought-provoking polls and witty commentary which makes the Webway a joy for your Inbox.
It's all here at your fingertips. Start scrolling through this letter. Now, activate the proper runes, steel your will and prepare. We're jumping through the Webway!
Note (from Dan): This is Face's last newsletter and he asked me to tell everyone that he really had a great time writing it and corresponding with everyone. So, let's enjoy this last newsletter of Face's and see what's been going on with Games Workshop. Don't worry though, the Newsletter will appear next month and on schedule, or at least I'll say it's on schedule and blame it on someone else.
THE COMET HAS HIT - MORDHEIM IS HERE!

Mordheim has arrived and it is absolutely amazing. Set in the most cursed city in the entire Warhammer World, Mordheim is skirmish level fantasy combat at its best. Whether you choose to play as a Warband of hideous Skaven, grim Human Mercenaries or even the soulless Undead, Mordheim has enough hard-fighting action to keep even the most intense adrenaline junkie glued to the tabletop!
One of the coolest things about Mordheim is the fact that it functions so well as a campaign game. As your warband progresses from battle to battle, they gain in power, renown and skill. Of course all of the competing warbands in the area have the same idea for their own members, so you'd better be quick on the draw and ready to throw down with your rivals on a moments notice!
Each Mordheim warband contains anywhere from 3-20 warriors who are all looking for gold, glory and power amidst the rubble of Mordheim's shattered scenery. Let's take a quick look at each of the warbands featured in the rulebook:
Mercenaries: Reiklanders - Loyal and brave, these mercenary fighters make excellent archers on the tabletop. Middenheimers - Hailing from the dark forests of Middenland, these hairy barbarians are a terror in close combat! Marienburgers - Considered foppish and vain, these streetwise mercenaries are expert duellists.
Clan Eshin Skaven: From their temples in the far east of Cathay, these shadowy rat warriors flock to Mordheim in search of Warpstone.
The Cult of the Possessed: Those men and beasts who have given themselves over to the dark powers of Chaos find the blood and horror they are looking for amidst the ruins of Mordheim. Watch out for the Possessed!
The Undead: Creeping through the streets like a plague, the Restless Dead haunt the City of the Damned in soulless legions.
Witch Hunters: Zealous and filled with hatred for any Witches, Heretics, Mutants or other undesirables they might encounter (this includes just about everybody - Dan), these holy warriors fight in the name of Sigmar and the Grand Theogonist of the Empire. The only ones not under suspicion are other Witch Hunter Warbands (and even they look guilty to the most fanatical!).
Sisters of Sigmar: These pious warrior nuns were the only citizens of Mordheim to survive the destruction of the city. Now they face all of the dangers the city has to offer in order to protect the Old World from the warping powers of Chaos!
With two complete warbands (Skaven and Mercenaries), an enormous rulebook and plenty of scenery in every box, Mordheim will appeal to Games Workshop players everywhere. If you love Warhammer and are fond of the game to game campaign competition of Blood Bowl or Necromunda, then Mordheim is the game for you!
The Games Workshop US Website has comprehensive coverage of this excellent new game as well as reports from our own Office Campaign, ideas for running your own games, examples of our campaign newsletter and special Mordheim How To: articles. Take a look at what we have for you and your warbands at http://www.Games-Workshop.com starting on Tuesday, October 5th. Also be sure to keep an eye on White Dwarf Magazine every month for latest news on what new warbands are being released as well as new rules, full-color photos of 'Eavy Metal miniatures, battle reports and more!
Mordheim arrives next week, as in, you can pick it up and touch it just as soon as it arrives in you local store. It will be available from your local Games Workshop store, Rogue Trader retailer or better hobby shop. If you are unfortunate enough not to have a Games Workshop resource near your home, then you can get in touch with one of our many Mail Order Departments around the world or order directly via the World Wide Web from our online store.
FAVORITE FOOD STUFFS FOR GAMES WORKSHOP

Well, the results are finally in! I must say my mailbox was simply overwhelmed with the amount of people answering the question. Thanks to everyone who took the time to send me a response. Since I know everyone is eagerly awaiting the results, I will spare you some of my innocuous text and get straight to the poll.
Originally, I asked what everyone liked to eat when playing Games Workshop games. Perhaps my starved stomach got the best of me (as I was drooling for food when I wrote the last issue), but it turns out there were a lot of really interesting entries. Of course, I did want to see a pattern so hopefully we could all decide to eat what hobbyists are enjoying around the globe! This way, if you ever have a game with someone you don't know, at least you'll know what to bring!
FOOD CATEGORIES
Bread - 3% of the vote
Candy - 13%
Cheese - 3%
Chips - 31% (Hurray for Chips!)
Cookies - 2%
Crackers - 4%
Desserts - 6%
Fruits & Vegetables - 3%
Meat - 8% (this one seems suspicious to us, must be Chaos players!)
Nuts - 2%
Pizza - 13%
Popcorn - 5%
Sandwiches - 5%
Soup - 2% (This one totally surprised me)

OkÉ So putting them into categories doesn't necessarily help you decide what the favorite food is, but the favorite food group. Well, according to our poll, as long as you bring a bag of chips (that's crisps to those UK types), any chips, then your gaming chums will thank you profusely! Listing the individual likes and dislikes would take far too long and would probably fill your entire mailbox with this one mailing. However, because I loved some of these submissions, I've enclosed some of the most popular individual choices as well as the most amusing munchable selections.
Proved to be universally loved was one of my personal favorites. Out of all the chip choices, people seem to like to bite into the incredible taste of Doritos (ok, if I am too descriptive, it's only because I haven't eaten yet today). Popcorn, another personal favorite, followed close behind. The great thing about both these foods is that they go great with pizza! I'm getting hungry just thinking about playing a game of Warhammer!
One of our subscribers even incorporates food into his games. He wrote, "Gotta be popcorn. Good to eat and when thrown in the air, it can double as a sudden meteor shower (popcorn kernels = S3 Blast, Save as normal)." So the next time you find yourself chowing on some popcorn, don't worry if you drop a piece on the board. Just work it into the battle!
A subscriber from the great land of Australia gets so into his game of Warhammer that it's almost possible to see the green tint of his skin! He wrote, "Sometimes when I play with goblins I take mad cap mushrooms. To get in the spirit of the goblin army, I go down to the shops before the game and buy some mushrooms. I lay them out on the bench and color them with food dye to give them that real mad cap look. Then in battle, when my goblin feeds on his mushrooms, I feed on mine." He reports that whenever he popped the mushrooms into his mouth, his shaman would cast the right spell. What a incredibly Orky thing to do!
Now, you might be wondering what to quaff when devouring your pizza and chips. Many people sent in what they like to drink in addition to their favorite food. Because I'm such a nice guy, I tallied the results for best beverage as well. Strangely enough, many people nominated beer as the number one drink, but since this is a family newsletter, I threw all those entries out. And now for the (non-alcoholic) results:
DRINK CATEGORIES
Coffee - 7%
Hot Chocolate - 1%
Juice - 11%
Milk - 1%
Soda - 72%
Tea - 6%
Water - 2%

Big surprise that Games Workshop hobbyists love to crush cans of soda during the frustrating moments of the game. What did surprise me is that some people actually drink coffee during their battles. I suppose, even Vampires need some extra caffeine staying up all night.
If you're wondering what type of soda to bring to the huge mega-battle you've been invited to, don't bring Pepsi. Coca Cola (aka Coke, aka the nectar of the gods, sorry, I really, really like Coke - Dan, oh and Faygo too!) dominated the crowds around the world as the favorite soda from the Games Workshop Webway. Excuse me for a moment, I think I need to go grab one right now.
RECENT GAMES WORKSHOP EVENTS

Whoah! Fall is here already and September was action-packed. Let's see what's been going on here and abroad in Games Workshop.
ZOMBIE GROSS-OUT-A-GO WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

The results have finally been tallied for our first-ever Online Contest - The Zombie Gross-Out-Go-Go! With over 30 entries and plenty of truly gross and repulsive conversions, our special guest judge and Rogue Trader Administrator, Chris "Go-Go" Gohlinghorst had some real trouble keeping his lunch down while he made his decision.
However, by the time the ordeal was over, we had our winner: Anthony Erdelji of Cerritos, California. Both he and the other winners will be receiving their reward from our Head Necromancer shortly. If you want to check out all of the models that we could manage to post pictures of on the World Wide Web, take a look at http://www.games-workshop.com/news/newsintro.html for the full report!
Hopefully we'll be bringing you more of this type of contest in the near future. Keep watching this newsletter and our home page for the latest announcements.

STIRRING IN THE WEBWAY - NEW RELEASES PREVIEW

Last time our preview gave you a sneak peek of the forthcoming Codex: Imperial Guard. Well, since everyone out there seems to be so excited about the footsloggers and dogfaces of the 41st Millenium, how about we give you an exclusive look at the most vicious, vile and depraved criminals who ever broke the rules in this Emperor's army: Colonel Schaeffer's Last Chancers!
Our Sneak Peek section is still going strong, but we have a new URL for it. Therefore, update your bookmarks and check out all the excitement at http://www.Games-Workshop.com/Webway/Webway_Preview_Halloween.html (I know it's hard to read, but it is Webway_Preview_Halloween.html).
What will I have this month to talk about? Read on to find out what Games Workshop plans to release in the near future. Now is certainly not the time to plan a long trip away from your local Games Workshop Hobby Center or Independent Retailer.
BATTLEFLEET GOTHIC - CHAOS PLANET KILLER!

If you thought that just because we were releasing a new boxed game that we were done with Battlefleet Gothic, think again. Coming in the US edition of White Dwarf #238 is the biggest and the baddest Chaos craft ever to threaten the Gothic Sector - The Chaos Planet Killer.
This enormous vessel is so powerful and destructive that the other Commanders in the area simply don't even believe it exists. They just chock up its planet-tearing activities to random supernova and other celestial events. Well, if you worship the forces of Chaos, you know the truth and soon you will be able to bring the unstoppable might of this juggernaut to bear on your foolish enemies!
Currently, Games Workshop Mail Order Departments from around the globe are taking Advance Orders for this new boxed set. What does this mean? The release cannot be far away! While, the leadership here in the US won't confirm a release date for me, I'd be willing to guess we won't have to wait long. Of course, working in the US Promotions Department has its perks, so I have been able to catch a glimpse of the new box and everything that is packed inside.
FORGE WORLD

The newest division of Games Workshop specializes in making incredible pieces of scenery and original large-scale Games Workshop sculptures. Forge World is releasing new models all the time. In fact, I managed to get in touch with a few of their guys and grab a hold of some images of the new models. What can you find previewed? Well, this time Warhammer 40,000 treadheads can fulfill all of their desires for really heavy metal on the battlefield with the huge 28mm scale Imperial Guard Baneblade. This model dwarfs every other vehicle on the tabletop and is perfect for a house rules "Capture the King Tiger" kind of scenario. (If you like tanks, you know what a King Tiger is. For those of you that don't, it's a really big and nasty tank! - Rich)
This model and the rocket-firing Manticore are now available for sale
For more Forge World excitement, check out their webpage at http://www.blacklibrary.co.uk/. They have some additional models for sale, like Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 roads plus Earthworks (like fortifications and gun emplacements). All you have to do is give the boys in Forge World Mail Order a ring at 011 44 115 916 8177 between the hours of 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm UK time (that's Eastern Standard time + 5 hours). If you ask really nice, they might even send you out a complete catalog.

MORDHEIM Q&A

Mordheim was just released in October and already our Roolzboyz have been able to unearth some Q&A from amidst the ruins. Peruse this arcane knowledge and use it wisely, as you never know what might jump out at you from the shadows in the City of the Damned!
1. The Skaven Special Skill - Tail Fighting - allows a model to fight with an additional weapon by grasping it in its prehensile tail. A Skaven Hero with Fighting Claws cannot use "any other weapons" for the rest of the battle. Does this mean that the Tail Fighting skill is useless in combat for models armed with Fighting Claws? No. With Tail Fighting you can still use an additional weapon.
2. The Dwarf Troll Slayer has a Ferocious Charge which doubles his attacks when charging at the cost of a -1 to hit penalty. This penalty is negated by his other skill Berserker which gives him a +1 to hit when charging. What's the point of having the modifiers at all or is one of them incorrect? They are both correct. It is not required that skills be used in most cases. The Troll Slayer could opt not to use the Ferocious Charge if he though the opponent was not nasty enough to warrant it or if he really wanted to make sure that his fewer number of attacks actually hit.
3. The Skaven Special Skill - Tail Fighting - allows the model to use a shield. However, Skaven Heroes can't get shields. What's the deal? Oops! The Skaven Equipment Lists are correct, Skaven Heroes still can't have shields.
There you have it, some of the mysteries of Mordheim explained! If you don't know what Mordheim is and want to find out what our newest skirmish game set in the deadliest city in the Old World is about, take a look in White Dwarf #238 (out the week of October 4, 1999) or click your browser to our World Wide Website at: http://www.Games-Workshop.com

QUESTION OF THE MONTH

I've been asking all these questions of you to find out what Games Workshop fanatics enjoy around the world. I just realized that I don't even know where most of you are from! To remedy this problem, let's see just where you read the Games Workshop Webway. What country are you from, oh and Dan wants to know what your favorite model is? Perhaps more Australians read the newsletter than Germans (and everyone loves Throt - Dan). Wouldn't you like to know? Only one way to help me, write in with the country you live in and your favorite model for Dan.
For the last Question of the Month, I received 218 entries, which was the most I've gotten so far. That's fantastic! I want to hear from you, honestly! Ask anyone who has written in, I actually respond to your questions (perhaps not the way you might always like, I do need to keep some secrets). However, I'm greedy and I want to hear from more of you. Currently, there are 12,800 subscribers. With last month's turnout for favorite food entries, I only received about 1.7% of our membership. We can do much better than this! So if you would, take five minutes to just drop me a line and tell me where you're from. I promise, this will hurt me more than it will you.
Where can you send me email? Write me at Troll@games-workshop.com and title your email Question of the Month. I can't wait to watch my mailbox fill some more.
HALLOWEEN HORROR

Halloween is one of my favorite days of the year and I know that all of you Games Workshop fanatics out there will just love what I'm about to suggest. Since a major portion of Halloween is getting dressed up in costume, how about celebrating as one of your favorite characters from our Warhammer or Warhammer 40,000 universes!
Just think of the glory you and your friends could attain by going to a Halloween party as the famous adventurers, Felix and Gotrek. How about the kick-butt Necromunda Bounty Hunter Kal Jerico or even one of our personal favorites - Fabius Bile. With so many awesome personalities to choose from your favorite Games Workshop games and Black Library publications, the possibilities are almost unlimited.
If you can manage to put together a costume featuring one of our characters before October 31st 1999 and send a digital or printed photograph of yourself wearing it to me at:
Printed Photo: Halloween Horror c/o Games Workshop US Promotions 6721 Baymeadow Drive Glen Burnie, MD 21060-6401 USA
Digital Picture (.jpeg, .gif, .eps or .tiff only please):

We'll try to post all of the costumes and their creators that we get on the US website! You've got thirty days left, so get working and get your creative juices working and make this a Games Workshop Halloween!

FINAL THOUGHTS

I don't know if I can stem the torrent of information pouring out of me, should I mention the rumors about the new Codex: Cat----- (censored by the Inquisition), or how about the far-future appearance of the incredible new Imperial Guard S------- (purged from Imperial Records). Uh oh, they've set the Adeptus Arbites on me! Ouch, no! Hopefully I'll be recovered to bring you another edition of the Webway next month. Hey, not in the faceÉ
If you've received this email in error or would just like to be removed from our mailing list, please send your requests to ListServ@games-workshop.com and in the body write "Signoff Troll-L."
