Review of Heroes in Space
Heroes in Space
The fourth book in the Fuzzy Heroes system of Miniatures combat. Here the intrepid Fuzzy Heroes have discovered a new doorway into a different, to them, world. The world of outer space. Seems children are born under a Lucky Star, which helps to keep them safe when they are young. The mean Renegades are trying to capture childrens Lucky Stars and the Fuzzy Heroes are there to thwart their nasty plans.
Along with the rules to create heroes able to adventure in space, having The Right Stuff as it is called in the book, you also get rules for combat in zero gee settings, a stand alone supplement for ship to ship combat and also rules to integrate the different settings presented here.
From the rules on what is needed to have the Right Stuff to how your Fuzzy Heroes can become a Teddy Knight, able to use the Fuzz, you get all the rules needed to bring your toys into outer space. Of course you still need the first book. But with that and some stuffed animals or toys you also will roam the stars keeping Frolichaven safe for all stuffed beings everywhere.
This is a superb supplement to the system. Coming in at 128 pages chocked full of drawings, rules, examples and great flavor text this is my favorite of the 3 items that I own from the series. It is not useless without the first book as the ship to ship combat is a stand-alone area. Still you will lose out on wonderful ideas and possible adventures if you do not have Fuzzy Heroes to move around the strange beds and planets that exist in outer space.
In the back section is a well-detailed set of directions to create the space ships the heroes and renegades will pilot. From the different types of engines, Rubber Band, Flashlights and other less technical ones, to the various weapons available like Sandman Missiles and Marble Mines all that is needed is some spare parts form the kitchen to make the space ships. In fact starting on page 122 are illustrations on how to make the different ships that are detailed as a part of the scenario in the back of the book. Along with full write ups of all the Fuzzy and Renegade heroes mentioned in the book there is little that is lacking form this supplement.
I think it would have been nice if they could have added in the basic character creation and combat rules which would have made this completely stand alone product. But that is not enough for me to mark the quality of this product down. With a nicely detailed story to it. Better I feel than the Sooper Heroes had, and lots of cool drawings this is a visual treat. As well as a good way to introduce your younger brother to the joys of miniatures. I think that this one is superior to the Sooper Heroes for showing to potential male players as most all of us have watched one or more movies or TV shows set in outer space. So the appeal of making a space ship from a milk carton and outfitting it with Rubber Band motors and Marble Mines is to use a cute phrase, "Way Cool".
So go and surf over to Inner City Games Designs and buy Fuzzy Heroes and Heroes in Space. I am very glad to own them and I hope that all of you will be also.
