Review of Widow's Might

Widow's Might is the third novel in the Clan Novel Trilogy: Tremere. Volume 1 is Widow's Walk. Volume 2 is Widow's Weeds. It is a fast read, and a little bit on the short side.

The book has no internal artwork, except for a sketch at the very end on a page advertising the Dark Age Clan Novels. The cover artwork was slightly below average. The font is readable. One note is that there are many chapters, some very short, but that the chapters are logically split up. This makes it easier to follow.

Here's the first problem. If you haven't read the first two books in the trilogy, this one will make little sense. This is probably a design decision of a trilogy being requested of Eric Griffin. Some authors would spend the time filling in, with broad strokes, the background of what has gone before. That helps those who may randomly come across the book, and grabbing it for the Vampire the Masquerade, or Tremere monikers. In the case of this book, it is a continuation of the previous two. If you have this book, put it aside until you read the previous two.

At which point, the book hits its stride. This review won't give away any spoilers. The story progresses down the plot lines. It's neither obvious nor trite. The characterization is good, and the action is paced fast enough.

The book then falters near the end. If there's no background because it really is one large story cut into three novels, then I'd expect a bit more tying up of loose ends. It moves towards the finish line, then stumbles around a bit.

The story gives enough closure to the main plot. Then I wondered what was happening to some of the other characters afterwards, but wasn't sucked in to the point of wanting another novel about them.

Overall, it was a decent read, and capped the trilogy. It's worth reading if you're a Vampire the Masquerade fan. It's not for the general public, as you really need to know the background of VtM to follow it.
