Review of Barsaive at War

I have been waiting for this book for a LONG time, ever since the initial release of Prelude to War. You can ask any of my players, I was annoyed when this book was pulled from the final publishing schedule after FASA pulled the plug on Earthdawn.

It was a long wait, but was it worth it.

While Prelude to War contained four separate events that affect the entire province of Barsaive Barsaive at War contains 8 such events, ranging from Throal declaring war on Thera to the final (and I do mean final) assault on Sky Point. On one hand I want to tell you about every event that happened in this book, but I feel that would be an injustice to this book. Many plot twists happen and there’s even a treat near the end of the story for longtime Earthdawn fans. I won’t give it away because it blew my mind when I read it.

Why should you buy this book? Well, if you were like me, you wanted to know how the story ended. It’s an extremely well thought out series of adventures. Not once while I was reading that did I feel that these things couldn’t happen in the context of what has gone before. Perhaps this opinion will change once I get these adventures laid out for my gaming group.

My only complaint has to do with the artwork. The artwork ranged from reprints of the original beautiful artwork that adorned many of the previous Earthdawn products to mediocre pictures which resembled nothing more than sketches that failed to capture the tone set forth in previous Earthdawn products.

I truly do believe that this is one of the finest (artwork notwithstanding) Earthdawn books published and I'm very happy that it has finally seen print.
