Review of Ogre Minatures Combine Set 1: Ogre Mk. V

The Ogre Mark V is a striking piece on the battlefield. It's 3.25 inches long, and bristling with two main batteries, six secondary batteries, and six missile tubes. Words cannot capture the unique style of this miniature, which was designed back in 1979 by Winchell Chung.

The body of the Ogre Mark V is cast in two main sections. These are both quite heavy, and will need some extra support when assembled. You could pin the two together, but I used two inch-long sections of a sturdy paperclip and lots of Zap-A-Gap on the underside. The four tread sections nicely hide these ugly modifications.

Steve Jackson games was nice enough to include two sets of the main batteries, secondary batteries, and tower in case the originals are lost or damaged. It is possible to attach the guns and tower with rubber cement, and remove them from the miniature to indicate battle damage (pulling off the tower when the Ogre is dead), but this might make it difficult to have a really clean paint job. This will also allow you to store the Ogre in the plastic box - otherwise it is too tall with the guns and tower attached.

Finally, the package comes with a "swimming tower" - the Ogre tower by itself on a round base with sculpted "waves" behind it. This can be used to when the Ogre is traveling underwater. It's a great way to top off an almost perfect package.
