Has this happened to you? You're walking around your local game shop and you see some of the painted miniatures on display and you think to yourself..'Hey, I can do that!'. So you go out and buy some paints, minis, brushes and rush home to create your masterpiece and it looks like something that your 4 year old nephew did in preschool. Don't you wish that there was a resource that could teach you how to paint these minis? Well look no further as Games Workshop releases their new book How to Paint Citadel Miniatures.
Chapters:
The book is broken into five different chapters which are color coded at the edge so you can find them when you need to in a hurry. It starts off with all the materials that you are going to need in order to paint these figures (brushes, paints, putty, etc.) and it leads into the next chapter which shows you how to prepare your models for painting. Everything is covered here from cleaning up the miniature of mold lines to assembly and finally priming the miniature and whether you should prime it black (for darker miniatures ) or white (for lighter miniatures).
The next chapter deals with the techniques that will be used in order to paint your figure. Everything is covered from the base coats to drybrushing and blending to even showing how to mix paints to get a shade that you want (a color wheel and mixing chart are available in this chapter, to take out all the guess work!). Bases, Varnishes and applying decals and designs are the basis of the next chapter which shows you how to put the finishing touches on your finely painted miniature. My favorite chapter has to be the last one as they take some of the popular Citadel Miniatures and show you step by step how to paint them as you can get a feel on what to do in each stage.
Comments:
I tried to find some fault with this book or something that they left out or missed but I could not find it. This is a very solid book and every skill level of painter from beginning to expert will get something out of this tome. I would have included a section on how to build dioramas and scenery but there are many websites that already cover that in depth.
Overview:
If you are frustrated trying to paint your miniatures and are ready to throw in the towel.. don't.. get this book instead! It will show you step by step what you need to do to achieve the basic results that your looking for and then experiment to get better results. This book is definately worth the $20.00 price tag for people who either want to try their hand at painting or for veterans who want to discover some new techniques.
