Review of Opaque 55mm D20 Countdown die
This being my first ever review, I thought I would try out something small, easy and of novelty value.

Sizing it up, this is a Massive die. It sits in your hand like a baseball, with good weight and you really feel that you could do some damage with it. The die is solid and looks quite pretty if I may say so. It is available in Ivory, Red and Black.

I purchased this product about 6 months ago, and since then it has actually spent more time in my pocket as a novelty item than being actually used in games. While it has travelled around with me, it has generated much interest and has been an excellent talking point. With it, I have been able to tell several people about roleplaying, and persuaded them to give it a go sometime. Due to time constraints, I have yet to do this however.

When in use, the die is actually quite disturbing to use on a tabletop. It bounces excessively and generates a massive amount of noise, so much so that I am worried it will damage my parent's fairly solid marble table. This die however is excellent for those times when you have a less than even surface, and works well on fairly thick carpet. this could be useful if you play in unorthodox/outdoor enironments.

A further use I have found for this die is as a weapon to threaten the players in the group I regularly GM. The threat of a large and heavy die hitting you is not something to be sneezed at. (Especially since I get to punch them too if it lands on a 20. :D )

The die itself is quite durable, and the several instances I have managde to drop it, there has been no damage to the die. Since I have had it, several children have gotten their hands on it and rolled it around a small hall. This has started to produce minor scratching on the die, and the corners are starting to look dirty and scratched. I feel that a die of this size should have really anticipated this damage, and taken steps to avoid it. (Though perhaps the damage shows up much more on the ivory coloured die I own) This is the only reason I have reduced the substance score.

In conclusion, while it isn't a cheap product, if you are looking for a novelty item to maintain player attention in your game, this may well be it. It is also a great RPG propaganda tool, and I intend to recruit more players with it when I get the time to play.
