Review of Fang & Claw: Raging Fury
A note of warning for those wanting an unspoiled view of these comics, look elsewhere as I’m prone to reveal the plot and events that these comics have awaiting you.

Raging Fury is a thick, black and white Werewolf comic collection. In featuring three Werewolf Tribes, these comics present separate tales as windows into the Werewolf saga.

Black Furies presents a tale of loss; Bone Gnawers is one of comic relief and horrific consequences, while Children of Gaia presents the warrior side of the peaceful tribe in a tale connecting to returning to a balance with Gaia.

The black and white art is appropriate for showing the starkness that the setting possesses. Savage and stylistic, the three artists featured make each tale more unique.

The comical styles of Steve Ellis lends a sense of unreality to the humorous Bone Gnawers tale, though not taking any savagery away from the grisly event in the story. The Black Furies art by Eddy Newell pulls us into the tale of retribution and loss as the main heroine loses her pack and her sister to her rage. Children of Gaia’s dream-like comic ties nicely to the sense of wonder that can be had in the Werewolf setting, also tying into the underpinnings of what makes a Garou a Garou. Each tale has notes by the author, Joe Gentile, and the whys of his story. The book ends with a collection of concept art by the artists.

This collection is a good introduction to some of the Werewolf concepts: rage, umbra, frenzy and, of course, Pentex and Black Spiral Dancers. Overall, any comic fan should be able to pick this up and enjoy the storytelling done here. Werewolf fans owe them at least one read through to see how their story could be put together.
