Review of The Gamer's Satchel

The Gamer’s Satchel

I must say, that my gaming group has it made. We have a terrific gaming room, with large 4x8’ custom table. We have three of the largest size Chessex Battlemats. We have shelves of terrain. We have a library of books. We have over 20 sets of Dwarven Forge’s Master Maze. We have a fridge which we keep stocked with all our favorite beverages and a bathroom. We also have a couple of cabinets full of miniatures painted by a true artist who is also one of our fellow gamers.

How did all this come about? It was simple, we decided to make gaming our main hobby. As adults, parents and professionals we have a lot of demands for our time. But once you make the decision that gaming is your hobby, you budget your time and a little funds and over the years your gaming group can put together a great collection of gaming materials.

But…

As the Wizard of Oz said, “But there’s one thing you haven’t got!” Even though we have all this gaming stuff we still have the need to cart around a few books and miniatures to every game. Now, if your gaming group is anything like the ones I have seen, you have seen things arrive in book bags, backpacks, tucked under the arm, miniatures wrapped in everything from tissue to bubble wrap, cardboard boxes and even a milk crate. Is there not a product that can carry both my miniatures and my books, pens and dice safely to the gaming table?

And Charon said, “Behold, the Gamer’s Satchel!”

The Gamer’s Satchel by Charon is a gamer’s dream come true. It has a comfortable carrying strap, the outside flap has a zippered pocket. Two other Velcro pockets line the sides. Inside is enough room to carry 3-4 gaming books with the miniature case alongside (take out the miniature case and you can easily carry 7 gaming books). This still leaves room for other items in the main part of the bag and then there is the pen holders, netted pouch and small zippered pocket for more pens, markers, counters etc. Plus, to keep everything snug there is a strap at the top to cinch the bag tight while providing easy access with a clip buckle.

Did I say miniature case? Yes, you heard me right. Not only does the satchel come with all that room and pockets but it also has a miniature case. But this is not a simple padded pouch or box to hold a handful of miniatures. This puppy has a double zipper so you can lay the case down, unzip it and fold the top back like a suitcase. Inside is a foam miniature tray that can hold 32 miniatures! And not just the older 25mm ones. Specs say the tray will accommodate 28-30 mm scale miniatures. I was able to pack the tray with Wizkid’s Mageknights including Steam Golems in there and they fit just fine.

Design of the bag was done with care and an eye for gamers. This doesn’t appear to be a travel bag jerry rigged for gamers. The carrying straps are securely sewn to the bag. The flap lid is terrific for easy access to needed books. Now you can finally leave your books in the bag but still be able to identify a needed book since they don’t have be stacked upright like a typical backpack or book bag. The logo is subtle but nicely done.

Weak points: There aren’t many. While the miniature case comes with some cardboard inserts, it would have been nicer if these were plastic and imbedded in the case covers. I did test the case with some metal miniatures. While they were all intact with a drop test I would recommend keeping the cardboard inserts.

I showed it to my fellow gamers and they all loved it. One gamer recommended a pouch on one of the ends to carry your favorite caffinated beverage. I personally don’t recommend carrying liquids right next to your gaming books.

And finally price. How does $35 Canadian sound?

I highly recommend the Gamer’s Satchel. It is a must have for any gamer that has to travel to a friends house for a game. You get a useful and innovative product for a great price. For us older gamers, we’ve never had it so good. So, toss your book bags in the corner and order a Gamer’s Satchel today. Spend a little money for a quality product that will protect your books; one that is made for oversized gaming books and make gaming your main hobby.

"Therefore, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Universitatus Committeeatum e plurbis unum, I hereby confer upon you the honorary degree of M.E.P. (Most Excellent Product)."
