Review of Feyna`s Quest
Feyna's Quest is a shareware 2d action adventure platformer similar to Zelda 2 or Metroid. It is one of the most well made and fun shareware games I have played. It is for the windows platform and requires windows 95 and a Pentium 200 or better. It can be found at http://eldwood.com/feyna/index.php . I played it on a athlon 900 with a TNT2 vanta video card.

The story of the game is interesting although brief compared to modern games. Its more complex then Zelda 2 or Metroid. The main character is a dark elf sorceress named Feyna. She is in conflict with humans that are killing magical races that live in other dimensions in a Christian style crusade. The end goal is to close the portal that the humans have opened. She meets different races and there is a bit of background and story for each.

The games story gets quite dark toward the end. The humans are doing very bad things. Most of it isn't on screen though. Feyna mostly comes after it has happened. She meets ghost of people killed and visits towns have been heavily attacked. The story parallels things that humans have done and talks about different sides of the conflict having different views of what is going on. I found it quite thought provoking.

The story has weaknesses however. The characters are not really well developed like a modern console rpgs. The dialog also isn't that complex. Its much better then Zelda 2 but not good compared to recent games.

The gameplay is my favorite part of the game. It has the same exploring and puzzle solving gameplay of Zelda or Metroid. Most of the time you are exploring large areas. Most of the puzzles are non-linear letting you solve several smaller puzzles before moving to the next area.

Combat with regular enemies isn't that interesting. They usually don't move in a very complex manner. In the beginning you have to kill some to gain money to buy important items. But your magic fires very slowly. Toward the end take too long to kill but you can fire faster. You can just avoid them through most of the game. You can collect mushrooms and sell mushrooms instead of killing sometimes.

The bosses toward the end of the game are very good. The last boss especially. The early bosses are very simple to kill.

If you are touching a enemy your health is removed constantly. In most games you would get hit back and be invisible for a limited time. So in this game you can die very quickly if you are not careful. Health powerups are quite cheap and you can save at any time so it doesn't end up being a problem.

Graphics are nice looking but simple. They represent the setting quite well. You can tell when you are in a mushroom forest or a fairy castle.

Sound is a bit weaker. Its boring and repetitive. The music usually fits the setting and changes when your situation changes which I liked.

I finished the game in two days. I was playing quite fast and was used to the style of gameplay. I don't think it would have that much replayability once you solve the puzzles.

I found Feyna's Quest very enjoyable and would recommend it. Its only 20 dollars. The demo is also very fun but I'd buy it to both support the developer and to see the last boss.
