It's also meant to be a set up for a SF universe in the QAGS setting and obviously is meant to have at least one sequel as several issues are left hanging in the air at the end. In the beginning it sets up a brief history of an interstellar polity and the deep space rescue department it employs for emergency situations. So, if you buy it be prepared to wait till QAGS releases the sequel to get some big issues in the game resolved.
The cover of DSR is a very, very nice piece of CGI art featuring a nice looking space opera type starship that seems fairly original. The CGI and graphics are by far the best cover art I've ever seen in a QAGS product, mostly noted for their 4 color comic style covers.
What lurks behind that cover is also a fairly well done product, but after getting a look at the cover art I was expecting the interior art to be good too, and it was generally quite plain. The ship map was far plainer than a lot of really old Traveller ship maps from the early '80s, to my surprise and mild disappointment.
Basically, the players are dispatched on a rescue mission to find out whiskey foxtrot tango happened to a ship who's distress beacon has been detected in a remote area of the frontier. Once they take care of this, a followup mission may await them if they managed not to get their ship frakked up to badly in the first part.
It's a basic adventure that leads a lot of doors open and will likely have the people buying it waiting for the sequel, who's existence was hinted at when it was stated early on that the background material in the module would be used in later products.
In some ways the minimalist style and format of DSR does remind me of some early traveller adventures, with a little (Ok, a lot) less emphasis on hard science and gritty realism. DSR will have a familiar feel to those LBB adventures from long ago, except it's exterior art is better and it's interior art is weaker.
DSR could be adapted to some other SFRPG settings with various degrees of work. It's definitely a space opera type game, so hard SF gamers will find it somewhat below their expectations. Space opera fans will find it more to their liking.
It's also meant to be a launching point for a campaign/setting from QAGS, but I see no evidence that further products are forthcoming at this time and it's been a while since it was released.
