Review of Random Fantasy Adventure Generator

Intro A few of you might recall Gareth Michael Sharka's excellent "make a game while you watch" column a few years back.

In it, he presented a method for generating instant plot outlines. In Random Fantasy Adventure Generator, he presents a similar product designed for fantasy gamers.

What it is The RFA Generator is a pdf booklet, available from Adamant Entertainment.

What it does The RFA Generator is just what it says. It generates with a few die rolls of a d8, a series of events, people, and places that are strung together into a sentence to forms a single one sentence description of an adventure.

From there, the GM can construct the nights adventure. Or perhaps longer, since there's no limit to the recursion the adventure generator can create. For example, a GM could roll for a campaign's goal, and then roll some events that happen along the way to that goal.

How it does it The product has 5 tables on an 8 x 8 layout. The GM rolls 2d8, and then compares the results to the tables. The tables are labeled DO, SOMETHING, LOCATION, COMPLICATION, OPPOSITION.

Putting the results together creates a sentence where the PC's must DO SOMETHING at a LOCATION while encountering a COMPLICATION and being confronted with OPPOSITION.

How well does it do it? The PDF is nicely put together, and very reasonably priced at 2$ US. It's nicely illustrated with some stock artwork, and has some good flavor page layouts, having been done with a 'ancient parchment' sort of page backdrop. It also contains some useful advice on how to adapt the results of the generator to your campaign.

Comments & Afterthoughts For someone like me who loves to improvise, but sometimes gets stuck for an adventure, this product is invaluable. It can also be very good for those times when you actually want to run 'just a quicky' session, or even part of a session. It's also great to get the wheels moving, providing just enough creative juice to start ideas turning over in your head. "WHY is the wand of princess Azuna guarding a giant red dragon?!"

For those of you looking to get a quick adventure together, but not wanting to pull down a module, this generator can really be a handy tool. And it can produce some ideas that really make your players give you that "you came up with a WHAT now?!" look that's so priceless.

Mr. Sharka has also produced a similar product for space operas, this one for free download. It follows much the same ideas as the RFA Generator.
