The Storyteller’s Screen takes a departure from previous old White Wolf products. In the past, before the new World of Darkness, the screen’s would come with little booklets that would provide some optional rules. Now you get the screen.
This screen is a four panel deal. It’s very heavy cardstock. The screen has the image of the Exalted cover, the new Circle and it’s 1st Age Counterpart. It’s not bad art but it’s nothing new or original. On the other two pages is a map of creation. It’s a solid map with some faded coloring.
On the inside, I’m disappointed that the charts and other bits are on what looks to be pages glued to the card stock as opposed to directly printed on the cardstock. Charts including are as follows: action options summary, order of attack events, order of modifiers, anima display, object strengths, hand to hand weapons, thrown weapons, archery weapons, tag key, defense value modifiers, regaining essence, armor, shields and cover dv bonuses, healing, environmental effects, feats of strength, poisons, sample visibility conditions, difficulty, mount control rating, successes, and morale.
Under each heading is appropriate information. For example, under difficulty it has one to five ratings and each one has a quick explanation. Under the different weapons, we have speed, accuracy, damage, defense, rate, minimums, cost and tags. So looking up the war fan, it has a speed of 5, +2 accuracy, +1L damage, +2 defense, 3 rate, STR 1, Dex 3, Mrt 3, Cost 2 and tag of M. The Tag key next to the chart shows that M = Martial Arts and may be wielded with Martial Arts of Melee.
I’m not as familiar with Exalted as I’d like to be. As a cursory glance, it looks like the major components of the game are here. The sturdy build of the screen is a godsend, but the repeated art on the cover and the glued interior charts don’t impress. The style of the screen, standard as opposed to some of these other screens like Arcana Unearthed or the variant Savage Worlds where they designed the screen in a landscape format might’ve added another solid point to it.
If you’re the type of storyteller who uses a screen and play Exalted, outside of customizing your own screen with the Savage Worlds blank format, this is your only option.
