REVIEW OF WALL OF IRON
Wall of Iron Sculpted by Clint Staples Published by Magnificent Egos MEO3013 $5.99 Artifacts & Dweomers

One of the great things about Magnificent Egos is that they do spell effects. Some of these are dead spot on like their various hand spells, spiritual weapon figures, or flaming sphere figures. The iron wall is both a failure and a success.

In terms of being a failure, it’s just too small. A standard wall of iron, per the d20 spells, has an area up to one 5-ft. square/level. As it’s a 6th level spell, that means that a wizard’s going to have to be eleventh level to cast it.

But Joe you may say, how could Magnificent Egos have made a wall that big? And doesn’t the caster control things like the wall’s area say by doubling the area but halving its thickness?

No, I don’t think that the company could’ve made a huge section of wall, nor do I think that they could take into account the various elements that go into the size and area of the wall.

However, I do think that they could’ve made the wall modular allowing the GM to buy as many sections as he wanted and having them fit as opposed to having them just lined up next to one another.

How does the wall succeed then? Well, it’s a great little piece of jagged metal that can be used as a section of a wall of iron or as a piece in another set up. It’s not a single sheet of wall or a single piece. Rather it’s a combination of walls that have sharpened spikes shooting out of it with rivets all over it. It has no slot or tab being one solid piece. Being one solid piece, it’s also incredibly easy to paint.

For me, I broke out my old Ral Partha steel, drybrushed some Games Workshop Chainmail over it, then used chestnut ink and black ink to represent weathering and finally picked out some studs and details with good old silver. Never let it be said that one can’t appreciate a good old simple piece.

By making it one piece that can’t be linked together, the sculptor limited it’s utility as an actual iron wall spell. By making it a great piece, the sculptor allows you to use it as scrap in a 40K game or as part of an iron wall spell with pieces pushed together.
