Review of Disposable Heroes: Paper Minis

Review (in brief) by C. Demetrius Morgan

Ok, so I have just started to downloaded these strange new things called "Disposable Heroes" that are "paper minis". (Available from Politically Incorrect Games.) What these are, for those who haven't already guessed, are printable cutout character minis. You remember cutout minis, right? They are little cardboard cut outs that have a character printed on one side a character silhouette on the other?

Ok, now that we are all on the same page, my first download went wrong. I got a PHP file. My second download, after I figured out what I was doing, was something else altogether. It was a lovely PDF with a ready to print character mini and. . .

I should probably mention you need an account at the PIG site for all this work. Once you have your account, and have done what you need to do to gain access to the minis, you choose whether you want to print color or black and white character cutouts. Then you hit "Preview Customize", which takes you to another page where you pick WHICH of the minis available you want to download. You can customize the minis with a "label" if you so desire.

These character cutouts are downloaded as PDF files. If you have a printer then you can now print out these minis till your ink cartridge gives up the ghost. Problem is, and I could just be too new to this to know how to make it all work right, is that you can't mix and match minis from different collections to maximize your printing. This means that if, say, you want only ONE cutout of the Giant Crab from the Smuggler's Bane pack and five human clerics from the Iron Gauntlets pack you will have waste 6 sheets of paper in total!

But let me digress for a moment.

My first mini I simply labeled "Woot!" then I went back and tried to see what you could do with multiple minis. Apparently you can't actually label the minis individually, which kind of sucks, at least I couldn't figure out how. Which resulted in three minis labeled "Huh?" Did I mention yet how much that sucks?

What doesn't suck is the art is good and you have the option to download ALL of the minis in a single PDF. Of course they will be unlabeled, but you will have the PDF. That means you can print out minis to your hearts contents.. .. .. Unless you want to print sheets of multiples. Which I see no way to do.

On the upside there are dozens upon dozens of such cutouts available. The phrase "up the wazoo" comes to mind.

Downloading is an cinch. Even a cave man could do it. *wink*

More later. I'm having way too much fun at the moment to really do a proper full blow critical review. But, rest assured, soon as I roll by Save vs. Mesmerisation I'll try to get a proper review up for everyone!

In the meantime you can find out more here: http://www.pigames.net/

That said I give Disposable Heroes 8 Golden Apples for nostalgia factor alone. Now, if I can just figure out how to. . .
