REVIEW OF URESIA D20
Uresia d20 - you know, I did consider not getting this book for a while. I mean, I already have the Uresia book (Tri-Stat BESM), which I loved, so how much could I hope to get from a d20 version? Just in case, I checked out the preview at www.guardiansorder.com. I got Uresia d20 immediately.

Uresia d20 is, not surprisingly, the d20 conversion for BESM's rich sweet fantasy setting, Uresia (someone needs to confirm for me at some point BTW that uresie is the French for urinary incontinence). In short, Uresia is a neatly done anime fantasy setting where the heavens fell, the gods died, and people now live on the ruins of Godshome. There are races (elves, dwarves, trolls, half-demons, centaurs, slimes, etc.) and lovely setting chunks from the silly anime-tastic (Dreed sporting chefs - with their own chef powers and their king is a 80s anime sukebe hero from modern Japan) to the cool and dark (Duandralin elven martial artists who are enslaved by demon beasts). Buy one of the books if you need to know more, or look at the preview pdfs.

Uresia d20 does do a lot of reprinting, obviously. The setting sections (history, myths, timeline, each country, secrets, the map) are entirely reproduced from the main book. The art is mostly the same, apart from the cover, which is a great colourful representation of what appears to be the signature party (no-one says this at any point - it's just that the knight, the big barbarian, the Boru dancer, the satyr, and so on are in a lot of the pictures).

The main addition, therefore, are the rules. And what rules. There are nine classes (Boru Sorceror, Child of the Sea Dragon, Dreed Sporting Chef, Duandralin, Elu Pirate, Emerald Knight, Rego Corunda, Troll Shaman, Yemite Necromancer), which are for the most part balanced, interesting, flavourful, and well-described, and nicely representative of the most interesting playing opportunities in Uresia. The main problem with the BESM d20 book was the limited usefulness of the main classes - if you really wanted to represent your character properly, you tended to end up having to go the Adventurer (spend your own character points) route rather than having to take feats and abilities you didn't want). These classes benefit from being more varied, more flexible, and of course being well-fitted into the setting. One thing I also liked about the classes was the way you often don't get your class power (Emerald Armour, Duandralin kung fu, Rego Corunda magic, whatever) until 2nd level, so you can spend 1st level just being tough but not, you know, especially scary, and you have to work out how you're cool without having kewl powers to back you up.

The races are also great - elf, dwarf, beastman (for all your vile perverted furry needs...:)), Winnowite demon (it'd be a setting spoiler to explain, I'm afraid), centaur, satyr, and some more wacky ones like slime (does anyone want to play one of these? or would they be a Slime Half?), snowman (again, long story) and ghost. I had minor quibbles with some of the racial abilities, but that's just my personal flavour of Uresia (PFU).

There are also rules for "mecha" (Emerald Knight armour; enchanted caravels; Laoch steam trains), a few items, and monsters. If there's a fault, I'd say that Uresia d20 needs way more monsters, but if you need them just use the D&D3E MM or, of course, wait for the BESM d20 MM.

As before, the d20 book closes with two locations: a small village and the central adventurer-friendly city of Achla Doru. Both locations are chock-full of adventure ideas, NPCs, and othere fun stuff - every PC party should visit Madame Ona's Academy for Magical Girls at least once.

Overall, top marks.

(My PFU additions: I've been writing a player's guide of sorts (to introduce my players to Uresia d20, and to make my own adds and modifications). I've added in suitable 3E classes (barbarian, bard, fighter, rogue, wizard) and BESM d20 classes (adventurer, magical girl, ninja, samurai, shapeshifter). I've also added some mecha (the golemsuits from Mecha d20 - Emerald Knights shouldn't have all the fun - for a character-sized Escaflowne feel) and some spell suggestions for the magical classes (I had a blast coming up with special manoeuvres for the Duandralin - they're like martial arts Lunars). If anyone wants a look at these I can try and send it over.)

In consulting DriveThruRPG we've come up with a number of products which we think might be related, but some might be inaccurate because the name, Uresia d20, is so short. Nonetheless, take a look, as purchasing through the RPGnet Store helps to support RPGnet.
