Review: Asamiya does an admirable job writing a Japanese Batman story that fits with the mythos and atmosphere of an American comic icon. I found Child of Dreams very entertaining, but nothing about it really surprised me. I never felt suspense or that Asamiya threw his readers for a loop. It would have been nice if the mystery of the drug had been more drawn out or complicated, and it was a pity that so many of Batman's greatest foes get no more then a panel or two in some cases... of course, they aren't really his greatest foes, are they? I've also never been quite comfortable with Asamiya's style of drawing. His tendency for huge noses and extremely tiny eyes on his men really does an injustice to his main character, Bruce Wayne/Batman. However, I think that American artists could take a lesson or two on the way he draws Bat's villans. They're the coolest.
Bottom Line: This is a nice, safe story for a foreign writer, even a renowned one like Kia, to write. It doesn't play too much with continuity or really examine its characters. Combined with art that ranges from great to awful... this book boils down to a tepid, mild mannered tale. A good read when your bored at work at 5 AM like me.
