Capsule Review by Robert E. Allen III on 08/30/98. Genre tags: none
What's that? Don't have enough toys to play with in your Jovian Chronicles game? This book includes full game details on no less than a dozen exo-armors, three fighters, ten capital ships, shuttles, robots, and numerous variants and options for each. Not to mention the space stations that they managed to cram in here, and given tons of details about.

This is a lot of toys.

The presentation is somewhat of a mixed bag. Not bad, just not equal for all items. Each includes at least one illustration and the play sheet of the item presented, and then some include bonuses like internal views, crew or pilot comments, schematics, service records and more. Instead of a dry presentation of the information, some of these really go out of their way to lend roleplaying flair to the machines.

The book is full neat like quirks that add to the rich Jovian Chronicles universe. Some of the pilot comments, for instance, sound like something out of a modern-day car commercial. Such quotes like: "Make no mistake, the Wraith is a brick. It's not built for finesse, just staying power and re-entry capabilities." Or, this one: "One of the things I like most about the Pathfinder is how ergonomic it is. Everything is right where you need it, from the tactical display toggles to the flight controllers." Sure beats the days of equipment lists looking like: Long Sword, 15 gp. D8 damage.

The layout of the book is up to Dream Pod 9's usual standard of excellence. I shouldn't have to even mention this.

It is a chore to try and find anything to complain about this book. If I had to pick one, it was when one of my players turned to page 40, looked at the Poseidon-Class Battleship (the pride of the Earth Fleet), and said: "Cool. Can I have one?"

The only good thing is I have a ship of my own to blow it up with, I guess...

Style: 5 (Excellent!)
Substance: 4 (Meaty)
