Capsule Review by Daron "Dan" Patton on 21/12/02
Style: 4 (Classy and well done) Substance: 4 (Meaty) This set of minis is a real boon to anyone who plays CARNAGE or who is looking for unique miniatures to field in other games including RPGs. If you're looking for filler for your Warhammer or other Fantasy armies or if you need to bulk up your CARNAGE forces, Holistic has given you a deal. Anybody who mounts Doom Geckos on Pangolins is on the right track in my book! Anyone who has played miniature wargames knows that there is a lot of variety out there. It's easy to sink a ton of money into miniatures and still have relatively few models to show for your investment.
Holistic has taken the miniatures from their entry into the Fantasy Miniatures Wargame category (a cool soda and pretzels wargame called CARNAGE) and made them available as the, aptly-named: Archers, Cavalry and Infantry Miniatures Set. This set of minis is a real boon to anyone who plays CARNAGE or who is looking for unique miniatures to field in other games including RPGs. Two forces are provided in this unpained, plastic set of minis: Barbarian Humans and Lizardmen. Both are really neat renditions Here's what you get with the set: 32 unpainted plastic miniatures jammed into one box, including... - 16 human and 16 lizard man figures (Each side has 4 archers, 4 cavalry and 8 infantry) - 32 bases (enough for all of the miniatures) - 8 connectable ruled measuring sticks (each connectable Range Ruler(c) is 4" long). - 2 dice (d10's) All of the components are directly useful to the CARNAGE ruleset and are great for building up your forces for even larger battles--not that you need more minis than come with the very reasonably priced main boxed set (the main boxed set contains two armies for a total of 96 models). The range rulers are handy because you can link the smaller 4" sections together to make rulers as large as you like (with units of 8" and 12" being useful for most wargames). You can link them together, if you're using CARNAGE rules, to easily remember charge distances, movement distances, etc. The minis paint up very nicely as you can see at Holistic's site: http://holistic-design.com/Minis/Carnage/Crng.htm (click on the link that takes you to "The Game" on the left top side) The price is hard to beat. At $16, you're paying 50 cents per miniature for high quality stuff. The trade-off is you have one pose for each type of miniature (i.e. all Barbarian infantry are identical, etc.). However, most serious miniature wargamer modellers will find with a little epoxy and glue that nice conversions are possible. If you're looking for filler for your Warhammer or other Fantasy armies or if you need to bulk up your CARNAGE forces, Holistic has given you a deal. Now if I can just convince them to release the CARNAGE rules separately, we'll be able to convert more people to this really under-rated game. C'mon, anybody who mounts Doom Geckos on Pangolins is on the right track in my book! Happy painting.
