Before you read this review, you should read the review of The Cities & Knights of Catan, also published today.

This review is probably a bit redundant, because if you're getting Cities & Knights, you've probably already decided if you want to supplement your Catan games out to 5-6 players or not. If you regularly play with more than 4 players, this expansion is a requirement; if not, you won't buy it.

The expansion has what you'd expect inside:

  • 12 more knights in the two secondary colors
  • 6 more walls in the two secondary colors
  • Labels for the new knights
  • 2 city calendars
  • 18 commodity cards
  • 3 more of those silly edge pieces
  • 2 Defender of Catan victory cards
  • Expansion rules

There's nothing special or exciting here. The expansion rules are a very thin 4-page black and white book that simply describes the change to the basic Cities & Knights gameplay.

The changes are also what you'd expect, namely:

  • Different setup for a slightly larger board.
  • A building phase in-between each players turns, to help ensure that players don't regularly get hosed by the robber.

There's also a note that you can activate knights on these in-between turns, then use them on your turn (usually knights can't be used on the same turn they were activated).

Overall, this expansions offers what's needed to bring two more players into the game and nothing more. Because there are so many components in Cities & Knights overall, the supplement contains enough stuff inside to provide good value for your money.
