At Gen Con, 2002, I had a chance to talk with people at both the Green Ronin booth and the Fiery Dragon booth and came away with some interesting tid bits. One of those, is that for all intents and purposes, this is probably the first Interlink product to come out of Green Ronin with another partner. Nicole mentioned that the OGL concept was still being finalized and that it wasn’t ready when this product went into print but it is the first product.
This book has over 200 counters and some notes on how to use them. The note include how do you use a counter that’s invisible, as well as providing three ‘generic’ demons with some templates to customize them. The templates include stretching, lightning, night, fire, raging and death. Add this to the three demons and you’ve got eighteen new monsters to torment you’re players with. The cards start with the name of the sheet at the top. For example, the first page I have is Demons. It has Dretch (CR 2) * 14. This means that there are fourteen counters of the Dretch. It breaks down the creatures by name, CR, and how many counters. The good news for evil spellcasters is that they’ll have a quasit or imp counter! The only problem with these labels though is that the R looks like an I. There are four Green Ronin sheets. Two for Armies and two for Legions. I think that the artist hit the nail on the head with the Demon Locust, which would be great for a game of The End and the Soulkeeper is another terrifying beast. My biggest disappointment, as far as representations go, is that Fiery Dragon didn’t elect to go with some unique creatures either from myth. I’m sure the artist would do justice to such old favorites as Orcus. The pictures are up to Claudios regular counter standards. The fact that they’re on heavy stock and in full color is an added bonus. The line between making full illustrations visible through the counters or head shots must be a difficult one for Fiery Dragon to make as at the booth I was able to look through his art book and trust me, the illustrations are fantastic but with the counters, the reduced size means that detail work is not your friend as it’ll become less visible as detail and more visible as inky blackness. Here’s my one problem with the cards. While there are visual indications of which creatures is which on the full sheet, once you cut that sheet up, you either have to have a great knowledge of what the monsters look like, or write on the back of the card before cutting up what each one is. Another option would be to scan ‘em for reference so that you always have a ‘core’ sheet. If you have Armies of the Abyss and Legions of Hell and are like me, terrible at conversions on miniatures, these counters are a live saver. The added generic demons with the six templates are just icing on the cake.
