Capsule Review by Scott Shafer on 06/21/98. Genre tags: none
This is a nice collection of four one-night adventures for Call of Cthulhu, and as such some of the more cosmic horror is eschewed in favor of some horros that can get quite personal. This is pretty good stuff, and it is ideally suited to the beginning keeper in a Cthulhu campaign. These scenarios are set in the nineties, but no information here can really keep a creative keeper from using them in the twenties.

The first scenario is called "The Closed Casket," and it involves (yawn!) ghouls. I'm tired of ghouls. They've showed up in "Realm of Shadows," and "Dead Reckonings." Still, this is a much better scenarios than the one in "Dead Reckonings." There's a nice little mystery to solve in here-- though veterans will have seen/read this before. The next scenario is called "Love in Need," and it is the best of the bunch. If its done right the investigators should have some horrifying choices to make involving life and death. "The Unsealed Room," and "A Cult of One" finish out the package, but they don't reach the heights of "Love in Need." A handful of handouts finishes the package.

This is a solid "B." Profound in its workmanlike content these scenarios are ideal for beginning keepers, and they come at a bargain price as well. Investigators should get a good fill of psychological horror here!

Style: 3 (Average)
Substance: 4 (Meaty)
