Description:

Survive! An Introductory Scenario is an irregular-sized 25.5" x 11" two-fold module. The front cover has the standard Aftermath! top border – black heading and survivor silhouette over a white border – and the standard illustration circle. The black and white illustration shows a man with a police helmet and a large scope mounted assault rifle crouched around a corner aiming off scene. The cover background is black and the text and FGU logo are white. The module has six pages with two pieces of black and white interior art and two black and white maps.

Survive! was a scenario module published by Fantasy Games Unlimited in 1981 and was included in the box set of the post-apocalypse role-playing game Aftermath!

Premise:

This is an introductory adventure "designed to allow players to get the feel of the Aftermath! movement and combat rules." There is no history of the ruin – the module is left bare in that regard – allowing the GM to determine the setting by personal taste.

Contents:

Survive! has two sections: a trading post and bandit hideout. The trading post covers an introduction (1/4 page), Lefty’s Trading Post and Flophouse (1/4 page), the situation (1/2 page), the bandits (1/2 page), after the brawl (1/2 page), and a map of the trading post (1 page). The bandit hideout contains hideout information (1/2 page) and a map of the hideout (1 page).

The two pieces of black and white interior art – two survivors with submachine guns, three survivors in a brawl – are by Robert Charrette and average quality. The maps are all black and white. Locations are labeled clearly on all maps. The adventure covers a barroom brawl with bandits and an assault on the bandits’ hideout to find a cure for a disease.

Problems:

There are no problems with this module as presented. It’s a good introduction to the game system and any problems will be minor, allowing a GM to ignore or modify them without difficulty.

Assets:

Only (roughly) 1 page is Aftermath! specific so converting the module to whatever game system you are using is not difficult. The specifics are NPCs. Rework them into your system and you’re done.

The generic nature of the module allows it to easily be put into any game that involves bandits, diseases and cures, and assaults on hideouts (which is pretty much most systems and game genres).

Conclusion:

The module succeeds in what it aims to do – an opportunity to run through the Aftermath! combat system. It covers it sufficiently, with plenty of space for the GM to expand it into the start of a campaign if necessary. It’s rather light for ideas and prepared material, but may still be useful in other post-apocalypse gaming (i.e. Twilight 2000, Morrow Project, Gamma World). It is currently available from Fantasy Games Unlimited www.fantasygamesunlimited.com for $24.00 for the Box Set. Be sure to check eBay and the used section of your friendly local gaming store for used copies.
