It was just another cake walk robbery. 7 perfect strangers to commit the perfect crime.
Sounds like a cyberpunk adventure, doesn't it. But it's not, it's the film Resevoir Dogs, directed by Quentin Tarentino, inspired by a Stephen King novel. The film starts out with the 7 robbers and their employer around a table in a restaurant, cracking various jokes. They then, after paying for their meal and paying a tip (aside from Steve Buscimi's (sp?) character, Mr. Pink, who doesn't beleve in tips), they walk out of the restaruant and the opening credits roll.
In the scenes following the credits, it becomes painfully clear that the job was hosed, and one of their number is a traitor. Paranoia spreads as they try to figure out who the mole is. The scenes after the heist are interspaced by scenes before the heist, where the some of the character's backstories are learned.
The events of the failed heist themselves are left to the imagination. All that is shown is the aftermath to commentary to what happened during the ill-fated robbery attempt. This is actually better than actually showing the heist, as it lets the players decide whether the anti-heroes get out by John Woo-type gunslinging, or western type firing from the hip, or of the type of gunplay present in films like the "Dirty Harry" series.
The film also show some useful things for both players and GMs for Cyberpunk campaigns and any campaign where the PCs are criminals. The main characters only know each other by psudonyms. I have been in many a cyberpunk game where the PCs often use their real name, alias, or street name. Also, it shows the "don't do's" for a good campaign.
All in all, the film Resevoir Dogs is an excellent film, with an excellent plot, that does a great job of telling a story with twists and turns that keep you watching until the very end.
