The Everway RPG has had a bumpy ride. First Wizards of the Coast
dropped it, apparently deciding they could make more money selling
second-rate artwork on laminated cardstock. Pagan Publishing
considered buying the game, then backed out of a deal at the last
minute. Finally Rubicon Games purchased Everway, only to discover
they were trying to breathe life into a corpse. For while Everway was
and is a fine product, its trials and tribulations have made life
impossible for it. But through all of that, the guys at Rubicon might
just do it. The Spherewalker Sourcebook makes a mighty good start.
Greg Stolze's Spherewalker Sourcebook is the first new Everway supplement produced by Rubicon Games since its acquisition of the rights last year. Designed as a companion to the Spherewalker Source Cards, this book presents in greater detail some of the people, places, and things introduced in the cards and adds several new ideas as well. Though designed as a companion piece, the Sourcebook can easily stand on its own. Many of the illustrations are reprints from the card set, allowing the reader to see the relevant illustrations without digging through (or even buying) the cards. This enjoyable and inspiring supplement is interesting because it manages to be generic and specific at the same time. Virtually every entry in the lexicon possesses the unique Everway tone, yet by avoiding rules and other system-specific information, the stories and information presented within are easily accessible to GMs and players of any fantasy RPG. Just reading through it gave me dozens of story and character ideas. Any lover of fantasy would find it an entertaining night's reading; any player of Everway will find it a worthy addition to the Everway multiverse.
