Jon Dawes review of the Battlepack

I've had a small carrying case for a number of years, which carried enough miniatures to play a small skirmish, but could never really accommodate a large force. Getting another case would just mean I wouldn't have a hand free to open doors, pay bus fare, or carry an umbrella. Large figures, like vehicles and monsters, would generally get wrapped in tissue and heaped into my backpack. Sometimes, I would arrive at a battle to find wings or antennae missing from my most prized possessions. I knew I should have taken better care of them, but what could I have done?

Until now, there was really no solution that didn't require me to spend hours of time cutting out foam to custom fit my army. Fortunately, I am now the proud owner of a Charon Battlepack. Not only does it comfortably fit all the miniatures I need for a huge game, including those big, beautiful, fragile ones, it comes with an adjustable shoulder strap, leaving both hands free for navigation. It's gorgeous, too; sleek and black, with a sharp looking logo embroidered on the side. The strong, flexible exterior makes it comfortable to carry and shock resistant. When I think of the homemade monstrosity I nearly wasted days trying to create, I have to suppress a shudder.

Another thing that I like about the Battlepack is the way it closes. This may seem a mundane attraction, but every carrying case I've ever owned has been basically a plastic box with plastic clasps to hold it together. I've found that those plastic clasps inevitably break, leaving me the unenviable options of buying a new box or breaking out the duct tape. The Battlepack takes advantage of an oft-overlooked innovation of modern cargo: the zipper. In fact, besides the all-important zipper that keeps the whole thing safely closed on my journey, the Battlepack sports two large zipper pockets, one inside and one outside, that can hold game rules, army lists, pencils, dice, counters, blast templates, and even a snack or two. It basically combines the best qualities of a sturdy backpack and a miniature carrying case, obliterating the need to travel with both.

Quite honestly, the Charon Battlepack is the best thing to happen to miniature gaming since, well, miniatures. For the price of all the miniatures I've lost in transit during my years of gaming, I could have bought two of them, but I really only need one. With my new Battlepack, I can bring every single thing I need to a big game without struggling or juggling, knowing all of my babies will get back home in one piece.
