Why is it that Steve Jackson produces some of the most elegant character rules on the planet in GURPS-- sure creating a character can be a nightmare, with all of the options to choose from, but once you're done you're done -- and he has paired it with a God-awfully complicated vehicle creation rules? That's the paradox which destroys this otherwise fine effort from Steve Jackson Games.

GURPS Mecha contains rules and background material for any type of battlesuit/anime game from Iron Man to Mazinger Z. The background and character rules are exquisite, as is the art from Dan Smith -- while the rules for creating the Mechas are a nightmare from Hell. Supposedly, these rules were simplified, but it sure looked and felt too complicated to me.

David Pulver writes extraordinarily good stuff (check out Reign of Steel), but this book is weighted down by some questionable complexity in what should be the highlight of the rules, making your own battlemech. This game gets a "D."

Style: 4 (Classy and well done)
Substance: 2 (Sparse)
