Purgatory is a 32 page soft-cover background supplement for the Kult RPG. It is one of the few landscape-format books I've ever come across that actually works. The cover looks flimsy, but the construction is actually quite sturdy. A series of stories run down the sidebar detailing individual Purgatories and the actions of those trying to rescue them. On the down-side, there are 9 pages printed on a disturbingly hard to read red-splattered background.

Purgatory details ten Nepharites; their powers, physical strengths, and personalities. Nepharites are servants of the Death Angels who remove the memories of human souls to prepare them for rebirth. Most souls are placed in their Purgatory after death, but some few misfortunates have garnered an early entry to Purgatory due to their incredible evil or a botched summoning.

The focus of this book is the impending Nepharite rebellion. Many Nepharites are disgusted by the petty bickering between the Death Angels and the Archons. They long to aid Astaroth in taking a more active hand in humanity's fate and blast mankind into the dark ages. To this end, these Nepharites have not been entirely erasing mortal souls but have instead been leaving subtle (and sometimes not-so subtle) marks upon the mortals' psyches. Led by Elijah, the most powerful Nepharite, this unholy alliance targets five of the ten Death Angels for replacement.

While the Nepharites are hideously powerful entities, they can and do interact with humanity either directly or through their minions. This behind the scenes view of the Inferno provides a GM a veritable gold mine of material. Three of the Nepharites detailed take great pleasure in walking the Earth to garner souls to torment and the rebellion provides dozens of opportunities for players to be directly or indirectly drawn into the conflict. As a plus, there are five new spells from the Lore of Death and four new artifacts that can be used to rescue a person from a Purgatory or trick them into one.

This is by no means a total run-down of all the Nepharites in or out of the Rebellion. GM's have plenty of leeway to introduce new beings, plots, or artifacts. I highly recommend it for Kult GM's who want ideas for large-scale plots or overriding themes for their campaigns. Used properly, this single supplement could spawn dozens of totally different campaigns for years to come.
