Genre tags: none | I've noticed that a lot of libraries stick Watership Down in with the children's books. I'm not sure what it says about me that I read it when I was 23 and loved it. Or that I just watched the movie last week. There's just something about the idea of heroic rabbits that appeals to me. In Watership Down and in GURPS Bunnies & Burrows rabbits are presented as great tricksters, but they're hindered in many ways: they're considered a snack by most of the rest of the world, they can't conceive of numbers above 4, they have no thumbs, and so forth. GURPS Bunnies and Burrows is actually a remake of the original game by B. Dennis Sustare and Scott Robinson, made in 1976. I remember one of the old hobby stores here in Columbus used to have a copy on their shelf and I never bought it because I doubted I'd get anyone to play it. I'm still not sure if I'd get more than a couple of people to play GURPS Bunnies & Burrows with me. It takes a rare roleplayer, I think, to be willing to play a character who isn't tougher than anything, isn't smarter than much, and doesn't have strange powers. Actually, that last bit is wrong. Rabbits in GURPS Bunnies & Burrows do have strange powers, but not powerful ones. Empathic Healing, a bit of telepathy or precognition, and the ability to use herbs for various semi-magical purposes are all in the book. As are rules for a rabbity martial art, and rules for rabbits throwing things. But this book isn't about creating a specific game-world so much as allowing a wide range of possibilities for playing rabbits. Herbalism, martial arts, whatever, can be left out, or other things can be added. If you really want Superbunnies, go for it! Sadly, GURPS Bunnies & Burrows isn't in print anymore. If you can find a copy, buy it. I had to check with half a dozen stores, one of them out of state, before I was able to find a copy. But it was worth the effort.
Style: 4 (Classy and well done)
