This is an old favorite for me. I bought my copy in 1986 and can't for the life of me figure out what I paid for it. Basically you move your armies around the board gaining more monsters along the way. The monsters you gain depend on the area you are in. For instance, in the Brush you need 2 gargoyles to get 1 Cyclops and you need 2 Cyclops to get a Gorgon. But 2 gorgons get you nothing (but another gorgon), the gorgon while one of the better creatures in the game won’t get you anything better than a gorgon. This is where the game excels, while the gorgons are a dead end, if you go to the Jungle 2 Cyclops will get you a Behemoth. Also in the Jungle 2 behemoths will get you a serpent (my favorite monster in the game). The problem here is that you are only allowed to move certain ways determined by where you start each move. This part is very complex and makes a lot of people give up on the game. The game is played on 2 levels, one level you move your armies and gain monsters. The other level is the attack level. Now to attack you must land your army on top of the army you wish to battle (very easy). When you attack another player you move to a cheesy board and do the battle there. Here is another trouble spot. The battle sheets are only regular pieces of paper and when everyone puts their monsters on it leaves you no room for maneuverability. When you play on the battle lands you must be sure to keep very good track of what turn you are on because if the attack doesn’t kill the defender in 7 turns, the defender wins. A turn consists of an attack/defend and then the defender now attacks and the attacker defends. It can really screw up the game if you don’t keep track of the turns religiously as it matters a lot to the game. The pieces for the game are ok, I wish I could say that they are great but I would be lying. The game is a fun game for a few hours and it is a different game each time. I know a lot of games can be the same after a while, but not this one. The rules and strategy are flawless; I recommend this game to everyone.
