Fortress of the Ogre Chieftain (Stock code: FAF 2001 Price: $12.95) from Fast Forward Entertainment represents a return to classic-style dungeon crawls. There is danger aplenty for a party of 4-6 characters of levels 3-5. Mostly what the party will be running into are mobs of things, including goblins, trolls, ogres, and even skeletons, but there is the occasional unusual encounter to keep things interesting. Author Timothy Brown spends a fair amount of space filling in the GM on the backstory from the world of the DragonElves (Related to the CCG of the same name) to help build atmosphere and set the stage properly.
Centuries ago, there was a massive white marble fortress built near the frontier between human habitation and the lands of the “Green Races”, i.e. Ogres, Trolls, Goblins and Orcs. On the day it was completed, an army of Ogres launched a surprise attack from the tunnels they’d dug underneath the fortress. The humans were slaughtered, and the Ogres now had a stronghold from which to launch other attacks. Eventually, the fortress fell into disrepair, and the Ogres abandoned it in their continuing movement to the north. The fortress may have been abandoned long ago, but it’s far from unoccupied today. A chance encounter with a group of hobgoblin bandits provides a crude map showing the location of a small group of ruins situated along the road to the ancient (and some say haunted) Fortress. These ruins would make an ideal base camp and safe resting spot for a sortie against the once mighty stronghold – once it’s been thoroughly cleared of any current occupants, that is…. Fortress of the Ogre Chieftain is presents numerous challenges for even the most seasoned party. There are more than a few surprises inside, and a nefarious plot begins to unfold, leading characters to the second installment, Temple of the Troll God. These two modules can both stand alone perfectly well, or they can easily be combined as part of a long-term campaign. A balanced party is extremely important for success against the dangers of this adventure, but the overall emphasis should probably be on fighting ability. Parties looking for a good, old-fashioned hack and slash adventure are bound to be delighted by Fortress of the Ogre Chieftan. Fast Forward Entertainment also provides a prequel adventure on their website (www.fastforwardgames.com), in which the players take on the roles of rampaging creatures during the ogres’ initial assault of a century ago. Their actions and accomplishments will affect the state of things in the later adventure, when the PCs approach the fortress for the first time. | |
