Every once in a while, a product comes around that does two things. One, people scratch their heads and wonder why nobody came up with - at least RELEASED - that before. And secondly, you wonder how you lived without it.
This is one of those products. Cavernscape lets you take the fighting underground - something that dungeon delvers have been doing for almost 25 years. This product lets you lay out almost any underground area in 3-D so easily you will be stunned. And that's not all. Just opening the box of Cavenscape will set your mind rolling. Memories of ancient modules involving the darkest depths. Adventures against crazed underdeep denizens. Battles in the heart of darkness. All sorts of things. Cavernscape includes a great mat to settle everything on, 43 3-D pieces of "rockscape", and enough "locks" (small plastic triangles that hold the stuff together) to prevent those clumsy gamers who love to knock your carefully constructed underground masterpiece into a cave quake. Shortly after pulling these things out of the box, we immediately set to work trying to assemble all many of dark and dangerous place. Hours later, after unsuccessfully trying to craw all 43 pieces into one killer dungeon, we dug out the page of maps that Geo-Hex provides. Building these took another few hours. (Ah, the joy of letting the group join in...."No, this goes there!" "Watch it, I just set that room up...." "Whaddaya mean you are building THAT one? We are working on THIS one!" Etc.) Next, we pulled out the miniatures and saw what happened when you try to have a firefight down thin winding corridors... Great stuff. I reccomend this for anyone who uses miniatures in any game that go be played in the underground. From Dungeon diving to seeking lost faire gold with six-guns, this terrain stuff is fun. If I had to list one complaint, it the finish. After using pieces to bonk someone with, they do start to develop chips in the paint. All you have to do is match some grey paint to the stuff, and you are good to go...but perhaps Geo-Hex could include some touch-up paint for those of us who are rough on things.
Style: 5 (Excellent!)
