Siege on Tolkeen
Capsule Review by S. James Schaffer on 29/06/01
Style: 4 (Classy and well done) Substance: 4 (Meaty) In general, i liked this book. However, as i said earlier, it seems like a waste to give all this info about tolkeen when the CS is going to in all likelyhood destroy it all,No matter how much I want otherwise. This will allow for a lot of poignancy for players familiar with these areas as described, as well as GM's who put time and money into it.Or for campaigns set before the siege, players and GM's alike will know the fate of this kingdom, and may make it a tragic epic. Siege on Tolkeen Five: Shadows of Evil had several good and bad points. As usual, i will break them down part by part.
The first chapter detailed how the whole of north america thinks, more or less, that the mighty coalition states and self proclaimed saviours of mankind, have been defeated by the wizards and D-Bees of Tolkeen. My main problem with this is that no description is given as to how the rest of the world is reacting to this perception. However, the coalition is merely licking it's wounds and will return soon."Tolkeen will fall" is the new cry of the dead boys. On another note, the demon legions of tolkeen are getting restless, and terrorizing the locals if bored enough. Most Mercs are leaving, and soldiers want to go home to their families. They stopped the coalition, and they are tired. The book went on to describe the various baronies of tolkeen, except for the vaunted city itself. The Markeen barony seemed of interest, as it was a destroyed ruin, the fall of which was downplayed in light of the sorcerer's revenge. Wildwoods remains an area that refuses to allow demonic agents. The other baronies seemed to be little more than extentions of "normal" tolkeen. Also of interest was the contrast between the fate of CS and tolkeen prisoners. The CS prisoners are put in a place that seems like a medium-security prison, while the Tolkeen captives are shuttled off to Drouge's secret death camps. In my opinion, i don't see how anyone could be shocked by this. The picture of those dress uniforms in the main book and the comments of erin tarn have associated the coalition with nazis, as well as their vile and facistic practices. But then i discovered that the CS doesn't approve of these Camps and this is a big black mark on drouge's record. In fact, the Deon Canton NPC let the prisoners of one camp leave, as he was disgusted, and the players are given a sceneario where they can liberate another one. Or for twisted GM's with CS characters, he can have them assigned to these hell- holes, and see how they react. The new NPC's were pretty decent, in general. However, one thing i hate is a "Gimmick" NPC. an NPC created for the sole purpose of showing off an OCC/RCC, like the calibur street irregulars in SoT 3 (The quick flex dude was alright, even if he did look like Michael Jackson), but aside from Lady white, this was not a complaint i had. (Created to showcase the gay new cyber-knight powers.) Skelebot Graveyard salvage tables. Do we really need one of these?I would say no, but then i thought of running a campaign with players who always scavenge. ALWAYS...like myself. The new tolkeenite Defenses and the barrens were cool, but all this info on tolkeen items, people, and stuff feels like such a waste, because we all expect the CS to win. Point: The book ends describing how Holmes forces survived the xiticix, and plan on attacking tolkeen from behind ungarded.Though i personally don't know where Holmes got knowledge of xiticix tactics, and in my game, i still play it as "He got eaten good", when i made a survival-horror one shot concerning the CS troops and the tolkeen agents chasing them, as they failed to survive the xiticix. This was what was said in SoT 3, so I'm runing with it. | |
