Genre tags: Fantasy Horror Far Future Conspiracy Post-apocalypse Gothic | A Note: When I last reviewed a Tribe 8 supplement, I did two reviews. An "initial impression", then a "Honeymoon's over". This time, I wanted to be more professional, so this review is after much reading and thought. A Quick OverviewWotF is the second "wordbook" for the Tribe 8 setting. Much like White Wolf's Tribebook/Clanbook/Tradtionbook (Blah blah blah) WotF takes a closer look at the Tribes of Magdalen, Eva and Baba Yaga. Now for those of you who are not up to date with the world of Tribe 8, here is a whirlwind summary...The world as we know it was destroyed by these spirit beings called "The Z'bri" who herd all of humanity into Camps, where they are slaughtered and raped but eventually get saved by these eight avatars of the One True Goddess, called Fatimas...*Deep Breath*...who help drive the Z'bri back and settle on Montreal island, naming it Vimary in the process, and proceed to run a tribal society. *Huff, huff* Basically Tribe 8 has a very rich and complex setting which cannot be given any justice in a review as short as this. I highly recommend that any one interested checks out: http://www.dp9.com/tour/T8.htm Back to the review... ContentFollowing the rather disappointing "Warrior Unbound" I was nervous to see what would be done with this book, So I shall put everyone's fears to rest...WotF is amazing. The first four chapters are written in the usual narrative style that Tribe 8 is famed for. The three stories presented are well thought out and show that the three authors worked closely together to link the tales. Each story truly captures the feel of the world and are filled with material that helps bring the three tribes to life. The last three chapters cover the mechanics of running a game using the information supplied in the narrative sections. These are up to the high standard that many have come to expect from DP9. Three new aspects are supplied (Although the back says there are four, this is an errata. There were only meant to three, apparently there was a miscommunication, so don't panic. Nothing is missing.) Also, it is good to see more totem spirits being introduced.
In SummaryA wonderful read, I couldn't put the book down. I really like the formatting and style that DP9 has decided to use in regards to this gameline, it creates a fertile and immersive environment in which to play the game. Although I have noted the odd typo (A common bane among RPG companies) these are so far and few between that it doesn't detract from a great book. Other Gaming companies need to start paying more attention to DP9's design philosophy. These people are obviously gamers who know what their fans want. Simple really. Keep it up!Style: 4 (Classy and well done)Substance: 4 (Meaty) | |
