Genre tags: Fantasy Asian/Far East Diceless | For those who are familiar with Disk Wars you know that it is basically a minitures type game using cardboard flats in place of traditional metal figurines. The result, a game that is rather inexpensive (ten bucks for an army pack and rules as opposed to say $75 for your average Games workshop minitures system (In all fairness the GW boxed games give you plastic minis as opposed to cardboard!)) Butthe advantage of this format is that much like magic, it doesn't take much to get in the game. well the popularity of this product has begun to spin off (much in the way Magic's success brought about Jyhad, and and endless supply of CCGs) The spin offs currently planned are a Star Trek based game called red alert, A Deadlands version of diskwars and now Legend of the Five Rings Diskwars, which is what I am about to review. Players of the original diskwars will note that the system has not changed at all, meaning you can use your L5R Disks along side your standard Disks or even as opponents. there are two new additional rules (equipment, which simply is bonus items that attach to a disk, and Dueling which works like archer only using clan specific "duel chits" also unlike archery dueling can't produce spill over fire) The art from the disks comes straight from the CCG so don't expect any surprises (but it also means you'll recognise that Hida Kasada disk when someone pulls it out of thier reserve stack!! All of the basic counters (activation counters, arrows etc.) have been given a more "oriental" look but pretty much serve the same function the rules have a few typos leading me to believe that they simply went in and modifes the orignal rules document as opposed to writing a new sheet! I'm a bit annoyed that it took as long for this product to come out considering that the parts were all there. but if you are a fan of the Legend of the Five Rings CCG or Role playing game, or if you enjoy Diskwars you will not be disappointed. Even if you don't know Doji Hoturi from Saotome Ranma, this game is Diskwars oriental, no arcane or strange rules, or different mechanics so anyone should be able to pick it up in no time Style: 4 (Classy and well done)Substance: 5 (Excellent!) | |
