THIS GAME IS INTENDED FOR A MATURE AUDIENCE! (i.e. This ain't Pokemon!) When I played this card game at Origins, the fine folks at Freak Factory Studios only had proxy cards to play with because they are currently saving up money to hire an artist. So there's no telling when this game will actually be out on a wide scale. Still, from the play test I took part in, this card game is something to look forward to. Porn Star is a 2 to 6 player game where all the players are producers of adult films. The object of the game is to produce as many porno films as you possibly can. In the play test, each player started out with $300,000. There are actor/actress cards, movies cards and action cards. During your turn you can put actor or actress cards into play. Each actor/actress card has a production cost and an upkeep cost. You don't have to pay anything to play an actor or actress from your hand but every turn after that you have to pay their upkeep (unless they're making a movie that turn, then you pay their production fee). During your turn, you can put one of the movie cards that you have in your hand into play provided you have the right amount of stars to make it. Some require as few a one female and one male star. Some need as many as six or seven actors to make. Each movie has a production cost (which you have to pay on top of the actor's production costs) and a specialty (i.e. pierced, water sports, bi, latex, bondage, etc.), meaning that if you get +1 for your production roll for each actor in the movie that has that specialty. Once you pay the production costs of the movie, you make a production roll (2D6) to determine how successful the movie is and how much money it makes for you. You can pay up to $30,000 for advertising which gives you +1 for each $10,000 you spend for your production roll. If your production roll is a disaster, you could lose even more money and some of your stars. You could make half or all of your production money back or if your roll is especially good, you could make twice your production cost back and get to steal stars from other players. After that turn, your movie goes to video and you make a residual roll every turn to see if the movie makes you any more money. If you find yourself short of the stars you need to make a film, you can wheel and deal with the other players to rent stars from them (but you still have to pay the star's production cost on top of the rental fee). Whether or not they want to cooperate with you and how much they want to pimp their stars out for is totally up to them, so try not to burn too many bridges while playing the game. Of course, the porn industry isn't below some creative backstabbing to get ahead. That's where the action cards come in. These cards represent some of the talents and character flaws inherent in the porn industry and can either help or throw a monkey wrench in the works. You could play the "Trip to Denmark" card on another players actor to change their sex or sideline an actor with the "12 Step Program" card so her or she can kick their drug problem or the "It Hurts" card which gives an actor irritable plumbing. Then there are the cards that add to the production roll like the "Money Shot" card that…well, you get the idea. This is a really fun card game. I especially like the wheeling and dealing that allowed because it gives the game a more "real world" feel, especially when one on the players goes on a Dr. Evil trip (I'll let you use my star in a film…for one million dollars!). The game play can be a very lethargic if you have more than four players (six people trying to make deals and screw each other over takes a long time), but the movie titles and actor names alone are enough to keep you and your friends laughing for hours. I'm definitely interested in seeing the finished version of this game.Style: 2 (Needs Work) Substance: 4 (Meaty) | |
