When looking at the cover of Reign of Steel; and then reading the back one gets the impression that this might be a Terminator-esque rip off. Well, that is where the Cameron influence wears off. This book is so packed with information that it'll make your head spin!!!

Pros:

There is a detailed background seection, and this alone would be enough gaming ideas for months and months, then you have the Zones (more later) and your character and other GURPS stuff...

OK the Zones- are essentially patches of land we used to call countries (yes, more than one) that are now ruled by an Artificial Intelligence. Each AI has its own personality and various quirks, likes, dislikes, and psychotic ideas. Each Zone gets a solid write up. The setting makes anything from a terminator movie look like a walk through the park! Diseases, cyborgs, infiltrators to scavengers, mutations, and Robo Factories are a few things that this world has to offer. If you are a Post Apocalyptic fan, this will definately do it for you!

The Robot section gives the GM enough robots to campaign with for ages, the character section gives PC 'templates', sample PCs, and rules for Robot characters, and the mandatory Adv/Disadv section. You know a setting is grim when there is a section on "Survival" 'nuff said. There is a section regarding campaigns and how this setting might be incorporated into ongoing campaigns and various cross-overs. THis book would work wonderfully with other GURPS titles: Alternate Earths, Cyberpunk/Cyberworld, Cthulhu Punk, and a modified "War Against the Chtorr" and Time Travel supplements. This book stands alone with the core book, nothing else is needed!

Cons:

The page count is only 128, I would've liked more. The price is a tad steep, (not counting the $2 increase put into effect on 2/1/98). The book would definately soar if the GM owned Robots and/or Ultra-Tech 1 and 2. The other down side is that this will probably be, like most GURPS books, a one-shot event. Don't count on future Reign of Steel supplements.
