It looks like Steve Jackson and Co. have lived up to their reputation with this new treatment of the winner of an award for Best Roleplaying Supplement of 1988 at Origins. Some time ago, Steve Jackson e-mailed me to tell me that their Setting Books for GURPS are generic for any Roleplaying game. This is certainly true for GURPS: Space, 3rd Edition.
I bought the book as an advance on ICE's own Future Law that is coming out for their new Spacemaster: Science Fiction Roleplaying line. I wasn't disappointed. The book is designed to show you how to make your own Science Fiction universe. It's plain and simple. The book is peppered with sidebars that give you helpful suggestions, some information about a particular campaign style, and scientific background. These sidebars do not detract from the book. The information in the book is all very useful in helping you craft your science fiction universe. From suggestions on character types ranging from the merchant to the primitive; creating galactic societies, to FTL rules and generating ship power, to starship creation (that integrates with GURPS: Vehicles). The book also contains important details on environments: from gravity, radiation, and different atmospheres on different planets. Want helpful suggestions for the stars in your universe? It's in there. Even astrographic features and unusual stellar objects like Black Holes and Stellar Clusters are included. Need to create an unique star system? There is a formula that shows you how. Overall, this is a book that is a must buy if you want do design your own Science Fiction universe. It's invaluable to those that Gamemaster Alternity, Spacemaster, and GURPS. Even Star Trek (classic, TNG, and Voyager) Gamemasters will find a lot of useful advice in this book. It has been excellently done, as I am giving this one an "A" in the substance department. And in this case, substance is better than style.
Style: 4 (Classy and well done)
