This game has been extensively reviewed already, but given the popularity of the movie "The Matrix" I thought that Extreme Vengeance was worth a second look. Because if there is ANY game that could accurately portray the action of "The Matrix," its Extreme Vengeance.

For example, how does one handle a universe where every character can instantly become skilled in any skill, at any moment? "Need to fly a helicopter? No problem!" Extreme Vengeance provides the answer, by using 1 attribute--Guts--for all skill rolls. The character can just be "assumed" to have downloaded the skill as needed. Likewise, how does one account for the sort of cosmic "there is no spoon" coincidences of the Matrix? With the Coincidence attribute of course!

Furthermore, take a quick look at some of the "repertoires" (ie advantages) provided to characters by Extreme Vengeance:

  • "Dramatic Slow Mo": By describing the character as dodging every bullet in a hail in slow motion, the character can avoid all damage for one combat turn.
  • "Fast Motion:" The character is being filmed in fast motion, so he gets a bonus to initiative.
  • "Multiple Angles:" By describing a single attack from multiple camera angles, the character does bonus damage.

I could go on but I think I've made my point: If you are--like I am--itching to run a game set in the Matrix, Extreme Vengeance is worth the $10.

    Style: 3 (Average)
    Substance: 5 (Excellent!)
